My Seller and I were standing in her kitchen when the woman who was Under Contract to purchase the home knocked on the door.? The Buyer and the Seller had become friends during the transaction, and the Buyer stopped by to see if she could take a few measurements.
We all laughed and chatted for a while and discussed everyone's plans.? As we talked, an unsavory looking man could be seen through the window walking down the street.? The Buyer showed some concern and asked if he was a neighbor.
Having a six and a four year-old daughter, she wanted to make sure that there were no known sex offenders in the area.? We talked about Megan's Law, and I explained that the Sex Offender Registry was public information, and easily accessible on the internet.
My Seller went and got her laptop and brought it into the kitchen.? I navigated to the site and pulled up the area, and fortunately there were no registered offenders in close proximity to this house.? The Buyer was fascinated with the site and continued to peruse.? Moments later she started saying, "Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!"
We rushed to look over her shoulder to see what was causing such distress, and there on the screen was a picture of HER REALTOR.? Knowing that there had to be some mistake, I immediately started doing some investigation, and sure enough, he was on there for First Degree Sexual Assault.
My first response was that it couldn't possibly be the same person because there is no way that he could have gotten a real estate license in the State of Colorado.? Even though the picture and the name were a match, there had to be some mistake!
Unfortunately, the more I read, the more I realized it was, in fact, the colleague that I had known for many years.? We had no details, just the stunned aftershock of trying to fit those pieces into a nice little package that we could understand.
I spent many days trying to find out how he could be in legal possession of a Colorado real estate license.? I spent many days scouring the internet and making phone calls, trying to find out if it was an innocent offense or a more serious grievance.? (I know, I know, nothing sounds 'innocent' about First Degree Sexual Assault, but I didn't want to jump to too many conclusions.)
The Buyer could not bring herself to face him, so we made arrangements to have her sign her closing paperwork prior to his arrival at the Title Company.? She waved to him as he was arriving and she was driving away, and she did not see him again.???
To this day, years later, I have no clue what the circumstances of his charges are.? As of this morning, he still is licensed with our local Board of Realtors.? I am still baffled how you can have such charges and be on the National Sex Offenders Registry (with a slew of mug shots) and have a real estate license.? THAT aspect of the situation bothers me.? Maybe I'll start asking questions again.
PS to the many inquiries ~ There is no question that the charges are legit ~ the question is WHEN was it and WHAT exactly did he do?? I will sleuth tomorrow and find out :)
