Amid roster questions, fans rally for PSU team

(AP) ? A pep band and more than 1,000 fans bearing signs and shouting their support for Penn State football turned out Tuesday morning to greet players gathering for offseason workouts amid a cloud of uncertainty in the wake of stiff NCAA sanctions resulting from the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

Starting center Matt Stankiewitch shook hands and slapped high-fives as he snaked his way through the crowd.

"It's awesome," he said. "I can't believe this many people showed up."

Fans carried signs, while others bearing inspirational quotes from Winston Churchill, Thomas Paine and Vince Lombardi were posted in the windows of the Lasch football building ? the same place Sandusky abused some of his victims.

It's Sandusky and the fallout from an internal report finding former coach Joe Paterno helped cover up the allegations that has cast a dark cloud over Penn State football, resulting in a postseason ban and lost scholarships.

But the scandal could cost Penn State current players, too ? most notably star tailback Silas Redd, who visited Southern California during the weekend and didn't attend Tuesday's workout.

Redd is perhaps the most important person to the Nittany Lions' immediate future.

The 1,200-yard rusher would be a focal point of coach Bill O'Brien's reconfigured Penn State offense and another good season could have the junior with the dazzling open-field spin move headed to the NFL draft a year early next spring.

On Monday, backup safety Tim Buckley, a former walk-on, became the first player to transfer from Penn State in the wake of the sanctions after returning to his native North Carolina to play for North Carolina State. Penn State also confirmed Monday that former starting quarterback Rob Bolden had left the team, though the demoted signal-caller was given the OK to consider other schools before the NCAA meted out its landmark punishments on July 23.

A handful of other players are at least considering a transfer, leaving the possibility open that Buckley's decision might lead to a chain reaction. Still, the majority of O'Brien's core players appear to be sticking with Penn State, determined to weather out what could be a stormy season for the program.

It's the difficulty facing players that prompted two former Nittany Lions to organize the rally.

"What these guys have had to endure and overcome, nobody has ever been faced before in college football," said Tim Sweeney, a businessman who hosts an online radio show. "There aren't any better representatives of our university than our football team."

Guard John Urschel was impressed with the turnout ? all for workouts that aren't mandatory.

"I haven't seen anything like this. It's unreal," he said.

After players arrived, fans streamed to the practice field to watch them work out. Local businesses provided coffee and doughnuts.

O'Brien said at Big Ten media days last week in Chicago that more than 50 players have re-affirmed their commitment to Penn State, though he did expect some transfers. Two Class of 2013 recruits have de-committed over the last week, but six prospects visited O'Brien during the weekend before, standing by their verbal commitments.

"We have a really unique opportunity at Penn State to do something really special," one of the six recruits, Cedar Cliff High senior Adam Breneman, said in a phone interview. Breneman, of Camp Hill, Pa., is considered one of the top tight end prospects in the country.

"We have a chance to bring a community together. We have a chance to be remembered for a long time and give a community hope."

Redd could be O'Brien's most valuable player ... if he stays. The tailback had seven rushing touchdowns last season, and averaged 95.5 yards per game on the ground as Penn State finished 9-4. Redd voiced support for former coach Joe Paterno as late as two weeks ago, after former FBI director Louis Freeh released the results of his investigation in the Sandusky scandal for the university.

Freeh said Paterno, who died in January, and three other school officials concealed allegations against Sandusky ? conclusions vehemently denied by Paterno's family and the officials.

"It has nothing to do with us," Redd had said about the findings. Penn State later handed the results of Freeh's investigation to the NCAA.

Redd had also said his opinion of Paterno, the coach that recruited him to Penn State, hadn't changed. He said Paterno, in his view, remained "the best college football coach of all time."

Since then, the NCAA instituted its four-year postseason ban on Penn State that would cover the last two years of Redd's eligibility. College sports' governing body is allowing Redd and all other Nittany Lions to transfer to another school and get on the field right away.

The only restriction is they cannot practice or play with Penn State this year and still play for another school this season, meaning the Penn State roster should finally be set once training camp starts in a week. But the process has set up a college version of NFL free agency, in which other schools have been busy trying to cherry-pick Nittany Lions.

USC appears to be the landing spot if Redd decides to leave. With an offense led by quarterback Matt Barkley, the Trojans will be highly ranked and one of the favorites to win the Pac-12 Conference. A person familiar with Redd's decision said the running back was returning from California on Monday and could make his decision as early as Tuesday. The person requested anonymity because no one was authorized to speak for Redd.

Fans certainly want Redd to stay.

Most downtown businesses are displaying "Proud to Support Penn State Football" signs on windows. Some stores have started selling shirts with the slogan "Billeave," playing off of the first name of O'Brien, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator.

Penn State fans and students have also started a Twitter campaign to sway Redd with the hashtag "StaySilas."

"With Silas Redd, or without Silas Redd, I would not discount Coach O'Brien's ability to make an offense and put points on the board," said Sweeney, who also heads the Penn State football Lettermen's Club, a group of former players.

Members of the football alumni group also plan to speak with players at a team meeting later Tuesday. Sweeney said he hopes hundreds of lettermen attend the meeting that O'Brien asked they attend.

Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said any plans by players to transfer would come from the players themselves or his new school, not Penn State.

It's unclear if Bolden has settled on a new school. He was the starting quarterback to open the last two seasons before losing the job to Matt McGloin each year. There appears to be an interest from LSU in Bolden.

This spring, McGloin was tabbed the outright starter by O'Brien, while Bolden was demoted to the third team.

Paralympian Carlos Leon Backs Warrior Games for Injured Veterans ...

This article is sponsored by Citi

Carlos Leon has never hung his head or even thought about feeling sorry for himself.

The 27-year old Paralympian shot put and discus athlete is a former U.S. Marine, but it wasn?t an injury in the line of duty that forced him to relearn how to use his limbs. After a successful tour in Iraq in 2005, Carlos returned to the United States. Visiting Hawaii?s Ala Moana Beach Park in Waikiki, he suffered a blow to the head in a diving accident that paralyzed him from the neck down.

?I was lucky because I had great support from the beginning, which helped keep me from ever being depressed,? Carlos said. ?It was a tough pill to swallow at age 20 and because I was a Marine, which makes you part of an elite group, you think that you?re invincible and then you find out otherwise. But, because I rehabilitated psychologically very quickly, I?ve been able to go on and work hard and embrace the hurt.?

His background as a Marine has helped him with his ?embrace the hurt? mentality, dealing with the pain that goes along with a Paralympic training regiment. Carlos, who hails from North Lauderdale, Fla., took the pain of his initial recovery in silence, too, and eventually was able to begin toning his muscles and regain strength.

Just six months after the accident, a conversation with Paralympian Gabe Diaz de Leon would change his life and send him on a path toward taking advantage of sports programs offered by the Veterans Administration in conjunction with U.S. Paralympics.

For many injured veterans like Carlos, the Warrior Games are an introduction to the world of Paralympic sports and a life-changing experience. The Warrior Games are a competition among wounded, ill and injured servicemen and women from all branches of the military. They come together to show off their fighting spirit and compete in several different sports, including track and field.

?Right away they were saying I had talent and recognized that I was willing to train,? Carlos said. ?Right away I wanted to be a Paralympian. That was late 2005 and in 2007 I made my first Para Pan American team. I was shocked at how na?ve I was to not have known before that this world of athletics existed. I thought it was incredible to see what those athletes can do and it just made me believe even more in what I could do.?

Carlos trains daily for his sport. His day-by-day approach to working out at a gym near his home in Palm Beach has him ?focusing on the process.?

?It?s the process that matters most,? Leon said. ?It?s about good warm ups and good cool downs, stretching and pushing myself. I love working out until my muscles are screaming for me to stop. I work out to hit the wall, and if I?m not hitting the wall of what I can do, I?m not doing it right. I call it bonking out and I love it.?

Carlos made the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, but unfortunately didn?t make the team for 2012. While he recognizes his days as a Paralympian may be numbered, he isn?t prepared to face a life without athletics.?

?It?s been a crazy ride and I?m still riding that wave,? Carlos said. ?If I step down from being a professional athlete afterwards I don?t think I?ll ever stop being athletic. This has consumed me.

Carlos has chosen to support the Warrior Games through Citi?s unique Every Step of the WaySM program. This allows him to raise funds for a competition that has evolved from the early VA sport programs that helped inspire him. The games pit disabled veterans of the five branches of service against each other in an all-out competition to see which branch is the best in everything from shooting to track and field and power lifting.

?It?s a serious deal for these competitors,? Carlos said. ?For some of them, it?s all they have to keep from getting depressed, so indirectly it?s saving these people. I was a part of the first military sports camp which has evolved into this. I know personally that it can give you something to live for.??

Carlos is one of 13 athletes whom Citi is sponsoring in its Every Step of the WaySMprogram. This innovative digital program benefits U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and athletes of all ages in communities across America by allowing fans to help allocate Citi?s ThankYou? Points to Sport Programs through activity on Facebook and Twitter, thereby giving Team Citi athletes the chance to say "thank you" to the Sport Programs that have inspired them.

Citi, a corporate sponsor of Team USA and the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), has launched its Every Step of the Wayprogram with a $500,000 donation to the USOC, represented by 50 million ThankYou? Points - the currency of Citi ThankYou Rewards. The unique Every Step of the Way program allows fans to help allocate these ThankYou Points to Sport Programs through activity on Facebook and Twitter.

The more fans participate through Facebook and Twitter, the more ThankYou Points they can direct to their Sport Program of choice, until its goal is reached. At the end of the program, the USOC will use Citi's donation to give the cash equivalent of the ThankYou Points directly to the Sport Program matched with the Team Citi athlete.?

UFC on FOX 4, Roy Nelson, Chris Weidman: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.30.12

It's fight week, that precious time in the news cycle?when the public relations drones at the UFC and FOX do their best to spawn storylines that will rope in viewers while media members of various degrees of accumen regurgitate or attempt spins?on what they perceive the real stories to be.? Yes, it's a kind of dance, but the music is lovely, and at the end of?it everyone gets to keep a goody bag of memories, plus whatever silverware they can steal.??With UFC on FOX 4 slated for Saturday, the?week will be spent dwelling on all things related to said show, and is that such a bad thing?? We're going to get to see?some perennial favorites in action,?so I'd say no, it's not bad at all.? Just be prepared to see at least one item about UFC on FOX 4 every day.? I'm certainly prepared.

  • A one-hour special called "UFC's Road to the Octagon", which hypes the UFC on FOX 4 main card,?began airing yesterday on FOX.? It will be shown again (and again, and again) on?the different FOX-owned networks between now and Saturday night, but since such factors as where you live and whether you have cable, satellite dish or a coat hanger antenna on your TV make it impossible for me to tell you specifically when you can watch it, I'll just say check your local listings.? ?

?

  • Roy Nelson, who won "The Ultimate Fighter - Season 10" (the season with Kimbo Slice) and has been struggling to find a place in the UFC's heavyweight division ever since, has been tapped to coach the upcoming sixteenth season of the beloved (heh-heh) reality TV show opposite Shane Carwin.? Nelson's also begun his campaign of irreverent hype by releasing?the names of people the UFC has forbidden him from using as coaches on the show.? As usual, MMAFighting ace reporter Ariel Helwani has the sweetness: ??

Former Strikeforce fighter turned Bellator and TNA Wrestling star Muhammed Lawal, pro wrestling legend Kurt Angle and Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories, are "non-UFC allowed," according to Nelson.? Nelson's manager Mike Kogan confirmed to MMAFighting.com that the UFC will not allow the trio to appear on the show.

?

  • Chris Weidman is riding high off his dominant destruction of the usually deadly Mark Munoz, so why not capitalize on that momentum by hounding UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva for a shot at the belt?? Actually, when Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes calls you an "amateur", I guess you're not really hounding, you're just defending yourself.? Am I right?? Anyway, here's Weidman defending himself, courtesy of MMAWeekly:

"I read them and it's kind of crazy.? The managers they have no right to start putting down professional athletes.? He put me, and (Alan) Belcher, and (Tim) Boetsch down and he's trying to draw attention away from the fact that I'm the No. 1 contender, and then called us amateurs, and we're all top ten fighters," Weidman told MMAWeekly.com when reached for comment.

?

Yeah, tell 'em, Chris.

That's all for now.

Colo. shooting suspect charged with 24 counts of murder

[Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET]

Prosecutors on Monday charged James Holmes with two dozen counts of first-degree murder and more than 100 other violent offenses related to the recent deadly rampage at a Colorado movie theater.

Holmes, who appeared in court with the same cartoonish orange-red hair he had at the time of the shooting, said only one word during Monday's hearing.

"Yes," he answered when asked by the judge if he waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days.

Police say Holmes, 24, blasted his way through a packed movie house during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora.

Twelve victims died in the attack, 58 others were wounded. The melee is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history. Prosecutors filed a total of 142 criminal charges against him, including 116 counts of attempted murder. The 24 murder counts reflect dual charges (premeditated and without remorse) by the prosecutors.

In the lengthy list of charges, the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office accuses Holmes of, "evidencing an attitude of universal malice manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life."

During Monday's hearing, Judge William Sylvester carefully explained to Holmes that the charges carry a minimum sentence of life in prison and a maximum of death. The district attorney near Denver has not announced if she will seek the death penalty against the alleged gunman.

Half of the 110-seat courtroom was filled with victims or their families. One survivor entered the courtroom in a wheelchair with a bandage on her left leg. Blood from a wound could be seen through the bandage. Some stared intently at Holmes, who sat at the defense table to the right of his two attorneys, throughout the 50-minute hearing. Others focused on Judge Sylvester and attorneys as they discussed procedural issues and hearing dates.

Ashley Moser lost her 6-year-old daughter in the attack and was also paralyzed in the shooting. Her aunt, MaryEllen Hensen, was in court on Monday and said the suspect looked more alert in today's hearing. In his first court appearance, Holmes was described by many as being dazed and groggy.

"When we'd seen him before, he looked kind of spaced out or out of touch," Hensen said. "He looked very alert today and very lucid."

Still, she said, "he had an expression and persona of evilness to him."

Some in the court's gallery wore sunglasses. One woman cried openly. Three people, including a woman with a bandaged arm, wore Batman T-shirts.

"It saddens our family that there is a man that has so much hate and evil in his heart," the family of Gordon Cowden said in a statement after Monday's hearing. "We feel confident that our judicial system, as will God and the public, see to it that this evil man receives the punishment he deserves and our hope and prayers are that one day, he will face God with remorse and tremendous sorrow for his actions."

Cowden, 51, had taken his two teenagers to see the midnight premiere. His children escaped the shooting spree without injury.

"Gordon was a man, working with their mom, to raise four children, to build a solid foundation for each; teaching them to love life, love themselves, love others and to love God," his family said. "And though this evil man has caused our family so much hurt and pain he cannot, nor can anyone ever take away or ever permanently damage this foundation of love for each other, for others, for life and for God."

Hensen, who lost a great niece, said she fears sending Holmes to death row will prolong the time it takes for victims to heal.

"As far as the death penalty goes, I am a Christian and I do believe he should just be probably locked away and live with what he did every day of his life," she said.

[COMPLETE COVERAGE: Colorado theater shooting]

Holmes was clad in tactical gear and possessed four guns and a stockpile of ammo when he surrendered to officers behind the cinema shortly after the July 20 shooting spree. He did not resist arrest, but investigators have since described the former neuroscience doctoral student as uncooperative.

Victims arrive at Monday?s hearing for suspected theater shooter James Holmes. (AP Photo/Ed Andrieski)

Police say Holmes legally purchased the guns in May and June but allegedly began stockpiling ammo and other gear four months ago.

"This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity," Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver, told the Associated Press.

At Monday's hearing, attorneys also discussed a package the former grad student allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mail room of the medical campus where Holmes studied. Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Dr. Lynne Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as 5 to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist, the Associated Press reported.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

[RELATED: Should the movie theater reopen?]

Experts say there are two levels of insanity defenses. Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, like Jared Loughner, who killed six people when he shot Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he told the Associated Press, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

(The Associated Press and Yahoo! staffer Tim Skillern in Centennial, Colo., contributed to this report.)

Small Business Majority breaks away from the pack | The Salt Lake ...

When John Arensmeyer owned a high-tech company, he didn?t feel that the organizations that lobbied on behalf of small business really represented him ? or many other business owners.

"They put forth a monolithic view of what small business wants," says Arensmeyer. "I felt they were overly partisan and overly ideological and didn?t really look pragmatically at what small businesses need. So I felt there was an opportunity and a need for a new voice."

In 2005, Arensmeyer founded Small Business Majority, a group that now has 8,000 business people nationwide in its network. Like other lobbying groups, Small Business Majority takes positions on issues including tax and regulation. But it doesn?t follow the pack. Arensmeyer?s group supported President Barack Obama?s overhaul of the health care system ? a stark contrast to the National Federation of Independent Business, which unsuccessfully argued against the law before the Supreme Court.

"Policy makers need to listen to different voices because there are a variety of small businesses out there," Arensmeyer says. "One of the things we?re trying to do is be somewhat of an aggregator of some of those voices."

Arensmeyer, now based in California, began his working life as a commercial and corporate law attorney in New York, where he was born. He served as chief operating officer of SoftAd Group, a developer of multimedia marketing products, and then founded ACI Interactive, an e-commerce company. He started Small Business Majority after selling his company.

Arensmeyer spoke recently with The Associated Press. Here are excerpts, edited for clarity and brevity:

Q. How is Small Business Majority different from other small business groups?

A. Most small business owners are pragmatic, the vast majority. Some are ideological on the right, some are ideological on the left. The fact is, most small business owners, as I did when I ran my business, get up in the morning and worry about payroll, worry about putting out a good product, worry about their customers, worry about all the bumps in the road. I felt that on many issues, the business organizations took very ideological, sort of blanket positions. For instance, all government is bad, or all government regulation is bad. That?s not the way most small business owners think. Most small business owners welcome government involvement sometimes, recognize a role for government sometimes, and sometimes they think government has gone too far. You really need to look at things on an issue by issue basis. Whether the issue was taxes or regulations, just to blanketly say all taxes are bad or all regulations are bad, I didn?t think that was an appropriate way to look at the world. I think it has hindered the ability of those organizations to really work constructively with policymakers on both sides of the aisle to forge solutions.

Q. When you say that small business owners don?t take blanket positions, how do you know that?

A. We?ve done extensive polling over the last five, six, seven years. When I started the business, it was a feeling I had but it?s been validated by polling.

story continues below

Q. What did you see in the health care law that made you support it?

A. The starting point is that the existing system is completely broken, so it?s hard to imagine anything worse than the status quo. That?s an important starting point because you have to be open to look at a variety of different solutions. We know that cost is the biggest consideration for small businesses. And so we were obviously looking for ways that the law could bring down costs, whether it was something specific for small businesses like tax credits, or the health insurance exchanges, which will enable small businesses to have the same kind of bargaining power as big businesses and offer their employees the same level of choice.

Small businesses pay 18 percent more than big businesses for the same coverage. The exchanges should get pretty close to leveling that because you spread the administrative costs and you provide small businesses with the same negotiating power as big businesses. That?s cost containment. Obviously, getting everyone into this system, the so-called individual responsibility provision, that?s a cost containment provision ? because right now, we?re all paying for people who are using the system and not contributing to it. The provisions in the law that put some kind of control over what the insurance companies can charge versus what they?re actually paying for medical care. All of these pieces as the Affordable Care Act began to be debated were important and we thought collectively, they were a huge step in the right direction. ..

All in all, we didn?t see any downside. The employer responsibility provision (that requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance) is so narrow it only affects 4 percent of all businesses, and of the 4 percent, the vast majority are already offering coverage. You have a very narrow swath of people who were affected by that.

Is it as perfect as it should be? Of course not, but it?s such a staggeringly large improvement over the status quo. That?s why we did support the law. What we need to do now is get it implemented, figure out what?s working and what?s not. Again it?s all about pragmatically looking at the facts. If there?s a portion of this law that isn?t working in two or three years, we should all be ready to stand up and say, it?s not working, let?s fix it.

Q. What is another issue that Small Business Majority has a different stand on?

A. Another example is clean energy. Clean energy is a huge economic engine for this country, for big and small businesses, and yet the policies that certain groups push seem to be supported only by traditional fossil fuel companies ? not even all big businesses, much less any small businesses. So again, it was an example of groups stating a business position, calling it good for small business, and really only reflecting a narrow segment of the big business community.

How Relationships Are Affected When Communication is Poor ...

?The quality of your communication is directly proportional to the quality of your relationship.? This sentence says it: when your communication is poor, so is your relationship. All of you who read this article will have experienced or are currently experiencing a relationship affected by poor communication. This article will look at how specifically it can affect the relationship.

Starting with the first affects it has on you personally I will then move to the later affects and also the implication is can have on family and the wider community.

Low satisfaction

First and most important communication is a critical, if not the most critical building block of a relationship. If communication is poor, lacking or challenging, then the relationship suffers and does not satisfy human basic needs of connection. On a personal level you might feel sad, disillusioned, upset, angry or frustrated.

Lack of support

Couples also notice a lack of emotional, physical and mental support when communication is disintegrating. Talking to each other is an important way to download the daily grind which supports the psychological and physical wellbeing of the individual.

Reduced intimacy

With the lack of stimulating communication and connection we will also notice reduced of lack of intimacy. Both partner, but especially women need to feel connected and understood which happens when communication is working well, before they feel like being intimate. Your frequency of sexual intercourse will most likely be influenced by poor communication and will reduce further if the problem is not addressed.

Affected health

If communication is continuously poor or lacking there could also be implications on your state of health. Unhappiness, depression, lack of motivation are only some common example of people living in relationships that are deficient of adequate communication. When you think about elderly people living on their own with very little opportunity to communicate you will notice their general state of health will immediately be positively affected when they have interactions.

Arguments, separation and divorce

At the end of the scale and when arguments have continued over a long period of time, relationships will often end up in separation and divorce. If there are children involved it can lead to numerous additional problems like parenting disputes, child support challenges and academic or behavioral school problems for the children.

My Brain Tumour: New Brain Cancer Vaccine Trial To Start In UK

Any news regarding clinical trials anywhere in the world is always welcomed by any brain tumour sufferer or family of one, especially if that person is suffering one of the most aggressive forms i.e. Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM).

Glioblastoma Multiforme is one of the most common types of primary brain tumours and also one of the most aggressive. In the UK, the present time of survival following diagnosis is between 12-18 months, a sentence no one wants to hear!

In the US, this trial has already been undertaken and it has shown to significantly extend the life of the patient, without any toxic side effects, to an average survival time of 3 years. Not much more I hear you say but still progress. Any extra time to do what you want and to be with who you want to be with for that extended period will always be a bonus to me if my quality of life can also be sustained.

A leading Neuro-Oncologist from Kings College Hospital will be undertaking these trials and what they entail is using the patients tumour to develop a personalised vaccine that is then injected into the patients arm. In the case of Glioblastoma Multiforme patients, they usually undergo surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible and then the removed tumour is used to develop the vaccine.

Great news for the UK and for the fight against brain tumours. More research is still required for trials such as this and as we can see from the Brain Tumour UK site, more action is required from parliament as brain tumour research is badly underfunded in the
UK.

Some People Do Not Know What Ramadan Is | Morocco World News

By Brahim Koulila

Morocco World News

Kenitra, Morocco, July 28, 2012

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam. Allah imposed it on Muslims for the numberless physical, moral and spiritual benefits that can be achieved by fasting. As such, Muslims are supposed to double their efforts to be closer to Allah during this holy month. He also wants people to work hard in this month, not to idle or play all day long. However, in Morocco, a lot of people do not observe this holy month as it should be done. Some like to play card-games instead of going to mosques, others go to night clubs, while some almost do nothing.

For some Moroccans, Ramadan is the best month or period to have fun and indulge in merriment or ?Lqsara.? There is no harm in enjoying oneself at all, be it from a religious point of view or a moral one. However, the way some Moroccans ?as well as millions of Arabs ?enjoy themselves seems to be contradictory with the spirit of Ramadan. This is supposed to be the holiest month of the year and the month in which Allah expects us to worship Him more deeply than in the rest of the year. In Morocco during Ramadan, some people spend the night at night clubs or ?khaimats? (tents), places like cabarets where people can listen to music and watch belly dancing. Others watch Egyptian or Syrian soap operas all day as if Ramadan were a month for killing time. Some prefer to play cards after ?Alfoutour? (breakfast) and do not bother to go to the mosque and pray ?Tarawih.? A lot of ?recreational activities? thrive in this month at the expense of religious ones.

What happens in Ramadan is a real paradox. Some people tend to enjoy ?red nights? in Ramadan more than during the rest of the year. Some gamblers indulge in playing ?Alaita?, a Moroccan card-game (form of gambling). This game, incidentally, has made thousands of people lose their money. During Ramadan a lot of people stay up just speaking about nothing. Caf?s become full during this month: because for some people, fasting is like a kind of punishment, and once they break fast, they reward themselves by going out and sitting at caf?s until midnight.

Is Ramadan a month of boxing? Some people become grumpy during Ramadan ? before Alfoutour. I have always heard the expression ?Mramdan? (angry because of not smoking or eating) in this month. Normally, this expression is used only for drug addicts who suffer in this month unless they have strong wills. Still, even normal people have their share of grumpiness during Ramadan. For instance, one will see people fighting in ?souks,? bus stations, public places and so forth. I will not exaggerate if I say that fighting becomes rather rife in this holy month.? Ironically, a lot of people behave as if they were fasting for the first time and give free rein to their anger and fury. Indeed, others prefer to spend this month the other way around.

Some Moroccans spend Ramadan in the shade. A lot of them consider this month a good period to take some rest and sleep in. I have heard about some people ? namely those addicted to smoking hashish?who do not wake up until ?Alfoutour.? Once ?the Athan? of sunset starts, they wake up and sit at the table to break their fast. They go immediately after breaking fast to caf?s to ?relax.? Others, who are not much different from the former category, like to watch Ramadan programs, series, sit-coms etc. They become couch potatoes in this month.

Moroccans are known for observing Ramadan with enthusiasm and eagerness to enjoy the blessings, rewards and repentance that comes with it. Yet, some people seem to misunderstand the rationale behind the holy month. They do things that should be cut down on in this month or not done at all. Indeed, Ramadan is a month in which Muslims should work as usual, go to the mosque, give more charity and read the Quran, among many other things. As for having fun, watching TV, playing games or sitting in cafes is not a crime or sin, but should be done moderately. Associating Ramadan with going to ?Khaimats? to watch belly dance, playing cards or suchlike activities deprives one of enjoying the grandeur of Ramadan. This latter is a school wherein Muslims, regardless of their cultural or educational backgrounds, are expected to learn a lot.

Barnes 2Q profit rises but misses expectations

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) ? Barnes Group posted a smaller-than-expected second-quarter profit and the manufacturing company lowered its outlook for the year, for both earnings and sales.

Barnes makes components for a variety of industries and has been hurt by slower sales of spare parts for aerospace customers amid a weak economy.

The company said it expects 2012 revenue to grow by 3 percent to 5 percent, down from an April forecast of 6 percent to 9 percent. Barnes lowered the ceiling on expected earnings, forecasting full-year profit after items of $1.78 to $1.88 per share instead of the earlier $1.78 to $1.93 per share.

Analysts were expecting $1.84 per share for the year.

The company's 2012 profit prediction excluded the impact of acquiring privately held Synventive Molding Solutions, which provides technology for injection molding. Barnes said the deal will close next month and reduce its earnings per share this year but raise them in 2013.

In the second quarter, Barnes' net income rose 11.2 percent to $24.8 million, or 45 cents per share, compared with $22.3 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier. But analysts had expected 48 cents per share, according to a FactSet survey.

Revenue dropped 1.5 percent to $293.4 million. Analysts expected $316.7 million.

Shares of Barnes Group Inc. rose 76 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $22.99 in morning trading.

NEW YORK (AP) ? CNN chief Jim Walton said Friday he is quitting, saying the company needs new leadership at a time its flagship U.S. network is suffering through some of its poorest ratings ever.

Walton built the company into a profitable international news organization in his 10 years as president of CNN Worldwide, and said it is on track for record profits this year. But the U.S. network is the most visible part of the business and is now entrenched in third place behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC in prime time.

He announced the decision in an email to staff members on Friday. He said he'll continue working until the end of the year during the company's search for a successor.

Walton said he's been talking to his boss, Turner Broadcasting Chairman Phil Kent, about leaving since the first few months of the year. CNN is owned by Time Warner.

"There's always pressure," he said. "I've been doing this a long time and CNN has had its ups and downs, like all companies have had ups and downs. I feel really strongly about a number of parts of this company. We're having a really strong year internationally and in mobile. It's clear there's a lot of spotlight on CNN's U.S. performance and it's reasonable that there is that spotlight."

CNN's U.S. network had its worst-ever ratings for a second quarter, down 40 percent for some of its prime-time shows. The decline was particularly notable in May, when CNN faced tough competition from broadcast networks during a slow news period and its ratings were compared to a year earlier, in the aftermath of the Osama bin Laden killing.

It hasn't improved appreciably since then, with veteran newsman Wolf Blitzer often losing in the ratings to broadcast novice Al Sharpton on MSNBC. Piers Morgan's show has been a bright spot this month.

The network was also embarrassed by initially reporting incorrectly the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on President Obama's health care law, then taking longer to correct itself than Fox, which made a similar error.

CNN's ratings traditionally fluctuate based on the intensity of the news. Fox and MSNBC have insulated themselves from that problem somewhat through its partisan prime-time hosts. Walton has resisted this approach, believing CNN's strength lies in being a nonpartisan news source and the company's reputation would be damaged worldwide if the U.S. network changed.

Walton said he doesn't expect that to change after he leaves.

"We kind of know who we are and our corporate colleagues know who we are and there has always been great support internally that we're going to be a news organization," he said.

At CNN, "we want to be accurate above all else, we want to be timely ? first if possible ? we want to actually go to where the news is, not just subscribe to some agency's news feed and talk about it. We want to report the news from multiple sides, all sides, and without bias."

Walton, 54, began working at CNN in 1981 shortly after it started. His first job involved ripping paper scripts off wire machines and operating the TelePrompter for news anchors.

CNN has suffered from weak programming and fundamental changes in the way people get their information, said Frank Sesno, a former CNN Washington bureau chief and now a professor at George Washington University. The company needs to make programming compelling enough to draw viewers used to getting their news elsewhere first online, he said.

CNN should put its attention toward other ways of delivering the news, said analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.

"I don't know what they can do to catch up with television," he said.

Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner chairman and CEO, said Walton took over an underperforming company in 2003 and tripled earnings, delivering an annual growth of 15 percent. Roughly half of the company's earnings come through subscription fees from cable and satellite companies, and they have been growing steadily worldwide.

"Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news," Bewkes said. "I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached."

Kent said Walton has a track record of great judgment when it matters most. He "challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further, do better," he said.

"I think this company needs some new thinking," Walton said. "I've been doing this job I'm in now for 10 years and I'm ready for a change."

Google confirms it still has a 'small portion' of controversial Street View data, apologizes

It has seemed like Google was close to putting its Street View snooping controversy behind it a few times now, but one thing or another keeps bringing it back to the forefront. Today, it's an admission from Google that it hasn't deleted all of the so-called payload data in question after all. That revelation comes in a letter from Google Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleisher to Steve Eckersley, head of enforcement at the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (or ICO), in which Fleisher says that Google is still in possession of a "small portion of payload data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK." Fleisher adds that Google "apologizes for this error," and says that the data was discovered after an extensive review of its Street View data that it has been conducting in recent months. For its part, the ICO has acknowleged that it received the letter, and notes that the data was supposed to have been deleted in December of 2010, adding that "the fact that some of this information still exists appears to breach the undertaking to the ICO signed by Google in November 2010." You can find both statements in full at the ICO link below.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Journal Communications Inc. says its profits rose 24 percent in the last quarter, as its broadcasting segment benefited from heavy spending on political and issue advertising.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Obese Kids At Risk For Heart Disease

July 25th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Health 24?..

Researchers who found that two out of three severely obese children already have at least one risk factor for heart disease say their findings are cause for concern in light of increasing rates of childhood obesity.

The study authors assessed heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, diabetes and cholesterol in 307 severely obese children, aged two to 18 years, in the Netherlands.

Boys tended to be more severely obese than girls at a younger age, while the reverse was true for girls, according to the study published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

What the study showed

Overall, two-thirds (67%) of the children had at least one risk factor for heart disease. When it came to specific risk factors, 56% of the children had high blood pressure, 54% had high levels of ?bad? LDL cholesterol, 14% had high blood sugar and just under 1 percent had type 2 diabetes.

The researchers were surprised to find that 62% of children aged 12 and younger had one or more heart disease risk factors.

Nearly one in three of the children came from one-parent families. Only one child?s obesity was due to medical rather than lifestyle factors, Dr Joana Kist-van Holthe, of the department of public and occupational health at EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, and colleagues noted.

Hyundai Motor logs record profit on overseas sales

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Hyundai Motor Co. posted a record quarterly profit as new models perked sales in overseas markets despite slowing economic growth.

The financial results, announced Thursday, sent its shares 1.6 percent higher in Seoul. Hyundai vowed it would meet its target of selling 4.29 million vehicles this year even though demand for cars is expected to weaken in China and debt-laden Europe over the remainder of 2012.

South Korea's largest automaker earned 2.5 trillion won ($2.2 billion) in the three months ended June 30, slightly higher than market expectations and a 4 percent rise from the previous quarter. Its second quarter revenue grew 9 percent to 21.9 trillion won. Operating profit was 18 percent higher over a year earlier at 2.5 trillion won.

The company said its auto sales in overseas markets jumped 15 percent during the first half of the year, offsetting a 5 percent sales drop in South Korea. Hyundai sold 2.18 million vehicles in the six months, a 12 percent increase from a year earlier.

The sales increase mostly came from Europe and the United States, driven by the release of new car models and its recently acquired sales units in Germany and France.

Hyundai Motor Co. is the crown jewel of the Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automotive group, which also has South Korea's second-largest automaker Kia Motors Corp. under its wing.

During a conference call, analysts questioned how long Hyundai would be able to sustain its growth and its high profitability as car demand is forecast to slow in China and Europe's debt crisis is dragging on the global economy.

Chief Financial Officer Lee Won-hee said the company is on track to meet its annual sales target and may even slightly outdo its goal as new or upgraded vehicles are scheduled to be released in key markets.

Hyundai is scheduled to start sales of a new sports utility vehicle in China later this month to tap that high-demand niche and to offset falling demand for other models. It is set to complete a new factory in Brazil in November as part of its expansion in South America.

Brittany Wenger, 17, Wins Google Science Fair Grand Prize For Breast

Have you ever helped the hard-of-hearing listen to music? Or built a computer program to diagnose breast cancer? These kids have.

The five teenage winners of the second annual Google Science Fair were announced on Monday, according to Scientific American. Each of these brainy teens were chosen from among 30 finalists from around the world and were treated (along with the runners-up) to a gala held in an airplane hanger near the company's Palo Alto headquarters in California. (This is Google, after all.)

But the winners, of course, were awarded the best swag: Prizes included a college scholarships from Google for $25,000 or $50,000, trips to scientific hotspots like CERN and Fermilab, and (perhaps best of all), trophies made out of Lego bricks.

What did these brainiacs do to win the admiration of one of the best tech companies in the world? Read about each of their projects below.

BRITTANY WENGER FROM FLORIDA:

gsf83

The Grand Prize winner of the science fair, for good reason, was a 17-year-old from Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Combining the fields of biology and computer science, Wenger wrote an app that helps doctors diagnose breast cancer, according to the description of her project on Google.

The type of computer program, called a "neural network," was designed by Wenger to mimic the human brain: Give it a massive amount of information (in this case, 7.6 million trials), and the artificial "brain" will learn to detect complex patterns and make diagnostic calls on breast cancer. Her program used data from "fine needle aspirates," a minimally invasive procedure that, unfortunately, is often one of the least precise diagnosis processes, according to Fox News. But Wenger is helping change that, as her program correctly identifies 99 percent of malignant tumors.

?I think it might be hospital ready," she told WWSB. "I'd love to get different data from doctors. Right now, I have 700 test samples.?

Visit her app at Cloud4Cancer Breast Cancer Detection (here) to see how it works.

JONAH KOHN FROM CALIFORNIA:

gsf63

For this eight grader from San Diegan, who won the 13- to 14-year-old category, it all started with a bite on his guitar. "Last year, when I wanted to play guitar with one of my friends, I realized it was much too loud in the classroom to hear the guitar," Kohn said in a YouTube video. "But if you put your teeth on the top of the guitar, then you can hear it no matter how loud it is around you."

Kohn saw implications for the hearing-impaired. For his science-fair project, he wanted to show that the experience of music could be improved for the hard-of-hearing through tactile sound.

Filtering songs down to different frequency ranges and applying those vibrations to different parts of the body (such as fingertips), Kohn showed that the listening experience of people with cochlear implants could be improved by 95 percent, based on tests of 12 individuals with hearing loss.

"I thought it was a very inspiring idea," Kohn told KPBS. "I thought it could help a massive amount of people."

IVAN HERVIAS RODRIGUEZ, MARCOS OCHOA, SERGIO PASCUAL FROM SPAIN:

gsf45

For the winning project in the 15- to 16-year-old category, this trio of young scientists form Logro?o, Spain documented the microbes and other nasty things living in the fresh water on northeaster Spain.

Collecting hundreds of samples over more than three years, according to their project description, they documented the presence of microbes found in over 60 fresh water sites, establishing fresh water quality for the entire valley of the Ebro River, mapped out below. (Watch them describe their project in Spanish in a YouTube video here.)

"They went back to a very ancient tradition in natural sciences, which is sampling the real world, cataloguing what you find, and then analyzing it to try to interpret what the implications are,? Vint Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, told Scientific American of their project.
