Oakland Chamber Non-Profit Roundtable Welcomes New Faces

Oakland Chamber News & Updates: Oakland Chamber Non-Profit Roundtable Welcomes New Faces

Oakland Chamber Non-Profit Roundtable Welcomes New Faces

By Jerry Metzker, Co-chair, Oakland Chamber Non-Profit Roundtable
Keeping agencies and organizations fresh and interesting to the community as well as current and potential partners begins by sharing what is new, and this was the theme of the October Non-Profit Roundtable meeting. Facilitator Ana-Marie Jones reminded those in attendance that we always have something new to share, whether it be staff, volunteers, activity or even feedback.
The Roundtable Committee, and the Chamber itself, always welcome new members and attendees with enthusiasm, relishing the different perspectives and ideas that each new company and individual bring to the conversation about helping Oakland thrive.
At this meeting, the Roundtable enjoyed meeting new Chamber Board Chair Shannon Pedder. In her business-life, Pedder is the owner of Brand Creative (http://brandcreative.mypromohq.com), a promotional product company. An Oakland native and long-time Board member, Shannon became Chair in July and will serve in this position for one year with the option to serve a second year. She shared with the attendees that she is committed to the non-profit sector and coalition building amongst all Chamber members. She is eager to learn more about the sector and follows and open-door policy.
While he has been Public Policy Director for more than a year now, Chamber Vice-President Paul Junge shared with the Roundtable his role and responsibility to represent all of the businesses to the city and county officials as well as share the business voice to the state. He noted that more and more often corporations are being evaluated by their corporate responsibility. As one of few Chambers that have a non-profit committee, the Oakland Chamber provides a unique opportunity to match private and non-profit companies and can offer leadership in this area.
The toast of the afternoon was Brandon Brooks, the Chamber?s new Membership Sales Representative and Non-Profit Roundtable liaison. Brandon relocated from Chicago after working for Urban Prep Academies. He shared his excitement in working with the diversity of Oakland and its chamber members, and his eagerness to connect more businesses of all kinds to the Roundtable. The conversation continued with several ways the non-profit members of the chamber can use their membership ? by networking, connecting with each other and other resources, by spreading the word about what the roundtable and the chamber are doing and even using the conference rooms for meetings and activities (when available). Extending the Roundtable?s mission and purpose to be the hub where the for-profit and non-profit sectors interact is crucial to strengthening the non-profit voice and the strength of the Chamber. Being new to others is always a great opportunity to be a reference and a leader.
Please note that the originally scheduled November 20, 2012 Non-Profit Roundtable committee meeting has been canceled. The next meeting will be on December 18, 2012 from 2:30-4:30 pm in the Oakland Chamber board room. We will be celebrating a terrific year for the committee and each other. Please join us for the festivities and food. Oakland Chamber Non-Profit Roundtable

Romney turns rally into a ?storm relief event?

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)KETTERING, Ohio? There was no Kid Rock playing on the loudspeakers, and the campaign signs were gone, replaced by a giant American flag. But Mitt Romney's "storm relief event" held at a local athletic complex here still had some of the trappings of a regular campaign rally, from the biographical Romney video to the woman in the crowd who wore a shirt that read, "Obama, You're Fired."

It also featured the same celebrity guests, including Randy Owen, the lead singer of the country group Alabama, who performed after Romney spoke.

But the Republican nominee still tried to cast a nonpolitical tone, scrapping his usual stump speech in favor of remarks about those "suffering" and "hurting" in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

"You can't always solve all the problems yourself, but you can make the difference in the life of one or two people as a result of one or two people making an effort," Romney said as he stood on a plastic equipment box in front of hundreds of stacked cans.

Romney's event here had been scheduled to be a "victory rally." But on Monday, his campaign announced he would cancel his political events on Tuesday out of respect for those affected by the storm.

Speaking to voters here, the former Massachusetts governor recalled a story from high school from when he and others were tasked with cleaning up the school's football field that was littered in the aftermath of a celebration

"There were just a few of us. And the person who was responsible for organizing the effort said, 'Just line up along the yard lines,'" Romney said. "And so today, we are cleaning one lane, if you will.? We're able to gather some goods for some people that are in our lane. We're going to help them."

After speaking for about five minutes, Romney spent about a half-hour helping supporters pack up cans in boxes to send to the storm zone. The GOP nominee won't campaign for the rest of the day, but he will fly to Florida, where he is scheduled to return to campaigning Wednesday.

According to his campaign, Romney will hold rallies in Tampa, Coral Gables and Jacksonville, even as President Barack Obama spends another day off the campaign trail overseeing the administration's response to the storm.

Romney Inches Ahead in New Ohio Poll; Weekend Polls Show Obama in the Lead

Polls released since Friday show a mixed bag of results, with both President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney able to claim the lead in Ohio. With only one week left before Election Day, Obama won many of the weekend polls, but Romney inched ahead in more than just Ohio. The race is as unsettled as it's been all month, and with Hurricane Sandy barreling down on the Mid-Atlantic coast, more chaos is in store.

Ohio

President Obama won two out of four polls released since Sunday, and tied in a third. Rasmussen's latest poll of 750 likely voters, released Monday, found Romney ahead by two points, 50-48 percent. The margin of error was 4 percent. An Ohio News poll, released Sunday but taken almost one week ago, found the race tied at 49 percent. The poll surveyed 1,015 likely voters with a 3.1 percent margin of error. A Gravis Marketing poll of 730 likely voters gave Obama a one-point lead over Romney, 50-49 percent. The poll's margin of error was 3.6 percent. And a Public Policy Polling poll found Obama ahead by four, 51-47 percent. The poll of 718 likely voters had a margin of error of 3.7 percent. Obama has maintained a small but consistent lead in Ohio in October, trailing Romney in only four polls all month.

Colorado

The latest American Research Group poll of Colorado put Romney back into the lead. In a poll of 600 likely voters, Romney led by one point, 48-47 percent. The poll had a 4 percent margin of error. Colorado has been close for most of the month, with Romney winning seven polls, Obama winning six and one poll showing them tied.

Florida

A new CNN poll of Florida found Romney ahead of Obama. A poll of 770 likely voters preferred Romney by one percent, 50-49 percent. The poll's margin of error was 3.5 percent. Similarly to Ohio, Florida has been leaning one way most of the month, in this case towards Romney. Romney has had a small but reliable lead in October, winning all but four polls this month. But one of those losses came this weekend. A Public Policy Polling poll released Sunday had Obama ahead by one, 49-48 percent. The poll of 687 likely voters had a 3.7 percent margin of error.

National Polls

Five new national polls show Romney continues to run well nationally, but the race is definitely tightening. A Pew Research poll of 1,495 likely voters found the two candidates tied at 47 percent. Both of the major national tracking polls still show Romney ahead. The Gallup Seven Day Tracking Poll gave Romney a five point advantage, 51-46 percent, but the Rasmussen Three Day Tracking Poll found Romney with only a two point edge, 49-47 percent. A Politico poll found Obama ahead by one point, 49-48 percent, while a Washington Post/ABC News poll found Romney ahead by the same result.

NASA to announce early universe findings

NASA is planning to announce a discovery from its Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope on Thursday that will shed light on the early universe, officials said.

The announcement will "discuss new measurements using gamma rays to investigate ancient starlight," NASA officials said in a statement Monday. The findings, which will be published in the November issue of the journal Science, will be revealed during a teleconference Thursday at 2 p.m. EDT.

Participants in the teleconference include Justin Finke, an astrophysicist at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington; Marco Ajello, an astrophysicist at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, Stanford University and the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley; and
Volker Bromm, an associate professor in the department of astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Fermi telescope launched in June 2008, and has been probing the sky in short-wavelength, high-energy gamma-ray light ever since. The observatory is named after Italian physicist Enrico Fermi, winner of the 1938 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on radioactive elements. He was a pioneer of high-energy physics, the domain of the Fermi telescope.

High Anxiety Around Hurricane Sandy

New York area families who were slammed by last year's Hurricane Irene are girding for a storm that promises to hit even harder. Still hours away from the worst of Hurricane Sandy, those who are in its path are in a state of high anxiety, holding their collective breath.

Kelly Salus, a 42-year-old mother of four from suburban New Jersey, has barely recovered from the hurricane last August, which left seven feet of water in her house. She and her husband were taken to dry land by boat.

It was there at the Pompton Lakes fire house Sunday where Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency and ordered evacuations of the state's barrier islands and Atlantic City casinos.

ABC News to Broadcast Special Expanded One-Hour Editions of "World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Nightline" Dedicated to Storm Coverage

The governor has predicted that residents could be out of power for up to a week after Sandy, now a category 2 hurricane, hits land later tonight.

The town's residents were asked to voluntarily evacuate because of power lines so close to houses, but Salus said, "I don't know where we would go with no family close by."

The special needs teacher and her four children, aged 4 to 17, are homebound today with all schools closed in New Jersey.

Last year, she and her husband, who is in pharmaceutical sales, had no flood insurance because they don't live in a flood zone. They got help from FEMA, but were out of pocket more than $25,000 when flood waters filled their house, destroying the furnace, washer and dryer and most of their finished basement.

While cleaning out the basement in preparation for Hurricane Irene, Salus reached for a cast-iron roasting pan that landed on her head, breaking her nose and giving her a concussion.

"It was on a top shelf and I reached for it and it fell on me and knocked me out," she said. "I had two black eyes and I was starting a new job ? I looked like mess, like someone had beat me up."

While coastal residents are more worried about the tidal surge, Salus said the rain and wind is her concern.

"I am hopeful if there is less than 10 inches of rain," she said. "Now we have insurance and a drain system and sump pumps...we should be able to handle it."

Hurricane Sandy: Live Storm Tracker

"We are as prepared as we can be," Salus said. "The winds can be a tad scary and downed power lines. But we saw the worst 15 months ago. We can handle it."

Lisa Palmer of Glastonbury, Conn., looks at old photos of the Hurricane of 1938 as she waits anxiously for another historic storm, Hurricane Sandy, to move up the coast.

"It's a little unsettling," said Palmer, 62, and a retired landscaper. "The Main Street was completely flooded. Stores had water up to the second-floor windows. People were polling in rowboats. We don't have a rowboat."

Palmer's home is on the Connecticut River flood plain, so she likely won't be inundated, but the town's sewage treatment plant could flood, as it did last year during Hurricane Irene, leaving them without water.

She has six prize goats, two of them milking. Hurricane-force wind gusts could also hamper getting buckets of water to the barn. "Livestock need fresh water all the time and those who are milking need more than ever," said Palmer.

"I have to get milk to the barn once a day and I am not sure I can tie a rope around my waist to get there," said Palmer. "I don't know how bad the gusts of winds are going to be. I am afraid to get out of the house."

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer | WJTV

The American Cancer Society is thanking walkers in this year's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-K for raising nearly $200,000 for breast cancer research and support. News Channel 12 is proud to partner with the Cancer Society in this year's seventh annual walk

Among the walkers taking to the streets of Jackson was Angila Parson, diagnosed with cancer two years ago.

"The effects on the body, you know, it's harsh," she tells us, proudly wearing a pink wig. "I have hair today, and I just want to be different in the route today."

Doctors recently told her she's in remission--nervous news many of the women at this year's walk can remember hearing.

How Can I Win Her Love Back - 5 Strategies To Win Back Lost Love

How Can I Win Her Love Back - 5 Strategies To Win Back Lost Love

Dear Kurt

How can I win her back?

Here's what happened. We'd been going out for about 6 months and everything was going smooth and our relationship was starting to get a little more serious.

Then out of no where she broke up with me. I was totally shocked and didn't know what to do. She said it was because we fought too much and that we were getting too serious too soon. I really care about her and want to get her back. Is there anything I can do?

- Broken Hearted

Dear Broken Hearted:

Out of all the emotions that we have, love is the strongest and most powerful one so when a relationship endsit stands to reason that it's going to hurt quite a bit. Now despite the pain that you're going through there are things you can do to win back the one you love but you need to know what to do and how to do it properly.

When it comes to getting someone back after a breakup, the most important thing you can do is to get them looking your way and thinking about you again. This article will give you five strategies you can use that will help get your ex thinking about you again and hopefully get you back together again.

1. The first thing you need to do is be honest with yourself about the relationship and the part you played in the breakup. I know it's not pleasant but it needs to be done. Your girlfriend said she broke up with you because you fought all the time. If this is true then it needs to be addressed by you. This is not the time to point fingers and lay blame, instead use your time apart to analyze the relationship. In fact I recommend that you get a pen and paper and write it out. List all the things things that might have contributed to the breakup and see which ones you can change. If you want to get her back you need to address this before you do anything else.

2. The next thing you need to do when it comes to getting your ex' attention again is to be dependable. Even though you've broken up you still need to be there when and if she needs you. Just be her friend and show her that you're someone that she can depend on and in return she'll start to see you as someone worth being with. Now this doesn't mean that you're going to get back together right away, but being depandable lays the ground work and the foundation for restoring the relationship you once had.

3. The third thing you should do if you want to get your ex to start thinking about you again is to encourage and support them. One of the things that people miss most during a breakup is the support they got from their significant other so if the opportunity arises, be her personal cheerleader. For example, if she's got a job interview, send her a quick 'good luck' email or something along those lines. Either way you want to show her that you've got her back and have her best intetests at heart.

4. Listen to her. Chances are she's going to call you at some point, especially if you've cut off all contact with her. When she does call, make sure you listen to what she is saying and VALIDATE her concerns. Not feeling validated or understood is the leading cause for fights in a relationship and since this was her main concern with you during the breakup it's something that you need to focus on here. Listen to what she is saying and take some mental notes and get your foot in the door.

5. Get a life. Don't sit around and sit on the sidelines. Instead get out there and live it up. Go out, have fun and rediscover yourself. This accomplishes 3 things. First it gives you self confidence which makes you more attractive to your ex. Second it reverses depression by taking your mind off things by keeping you busy. Third is that it gives you peace of mind by giving you both space and time which are key elements when it comes to dealing with your emotions after a breakup.

The Bottom Line

The key to win her back especially when she's dumped you is to get her looking your way and thinking about you again.

If you follow the 5 points in this article you will greatly increase your chances of getting back together because you will have improved as a person since the breakup which will make you more attractive to her.

California's Tri Pointe Homes Expands into Denver

By John Caulfield

Tri PointeTri Pointe Homes, the three-year-old builder, is expanding beyond its base in California for the first time into Greater Denver, where its goal is to be among that market?s top 10 builders within five years, says Tri Pointe?s CEO Doug Bauer.

Last month, Irvine, Calif.-based Tri Pointe hired 41-year-old Matt Osborn to run its Colorado operations. Osborn had been president of another local builder, Village Homes, where he?s worked since July 2000 and was its president for the past 3? years. Village Homes had been the Osborn family?s business until it filed for court protection from creditors in late 2008, and then sold two-thirds of its assets to the Homebuilder Capital Solution affiliate of Colorado and Santa Fe Real Estate.

?It was a difficult decision [to leave Village Homes] in terms of my family history,? says Osborn. ?But life is about timing. When I got the call from Doug and met with Tri Pointe?s people, it felt comfortable and at home. And what Tri Pointe is doing was a cultural fit.?

Bauer tells Builder that he started looking at the Denver market as a possible expansion opportunity about 18 months ago, when Tri Pointe and its financial partner, the investment firm Starwood Capital, were interested in acquiring the Arizona-based builder Taylor Morrison, which builds in Colorado.

While it lost that acquisition bid to a limited partnership of three investment firms, Tri Pointe was still restless. Since launching in 2009, the company has opened nine communities in Southern and Northern California, where it now controls more than 1,500 lots. Bauer says that Tri Pointe?s long-range goal is to become a regional builder, and he?s looked ?from Texas west? in his search for new terrains to conquer.

He says he likes Denver?s lifestyle and job growth. And it so happens that Starwood owns land in Denver, which it could make available to Tri Pointe at market-rate prices. (When he spoke to Builder on Tuesday, Bauer says his company was also considering an acquisition to break into Denver. ?The organic approach [to growth] guarantees profitability, while an acquisition gives you more rapid growth. The problem, though, is that it?s challenging to see what?s under the hood? of another builder.)

Within the next 45 days, Tri Pointe expects to find permanent office space for its Colorado division. And it hopes to have a few models on the ground in greater Denver by late 2012 or early 2013 to capitalize on next spring?s selling season. (Bauer says his company recently signed a letter of intent to buy its first piece of land in metro Denver.)

Bauer and Osborn say they will develop detached house plans that conform to what local customers want, and will price their houses in Colorado within $350,000 and $400,000, which is where Tri Pointe?s homes in California start. Tri Pointe will also look for rezoning opportunities, particularly in neighborhoods where inventories of new homes are low.

Tri Pointe closed 104 homes last year, and is on track to close between 130 and 140 in 2012. Next year, it plans to open at least four new communities in Mountain View, San Mateo, La Habra, and Mission Viejo, Calif., along with its first communities in Colorado, which might include construction in Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Tri Pointe?s goal, says Bauer, is to be closing between 350 and 400 homes in the Denver market within the next five years, ?which would definitely put us within the top 10 builders in that market.?

And while he has no desire for his company to become a national builder, Bauer says that Tri Pointe Homes continues to evaluate longer-range expansion and acquisition possibilities in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest.

BBC Turns Off CEEFAX Service After 38 Years

It's still alive and kicking here in the Netherlands, known as Teletekst. Every journalist wants to be on page 101.

There's even a web-interface and an iPhone app for it, which is a no-nonsense, clutter-free, low-bandwidth source of news, weather, stocks and sport results. I can't live without it:)

http://teletekst.nos.nl/ [teletekst.nos.nl]

I must say that I rarely use it on my tv anymore. Which is kind of funny, because nowadays it's still trapped inside the low-tech interface of the 70s although it's mostly used on devices so advanced that even the big visionaries of that age couldn't even dream about it.

Is it nostalgia? Or more like the Stockholm Syndrome? Or does it just hit a sweet spot of usability and simplicity?

China leader's persona forged by harsh early life

LIANGJIAHE, China (AP) ? The next leader of China spent much of his youth living in a dug-out cave.

Xi Jingping's seven years in this remote northern community meant toiling alongside rural villagers by day and sleeping on bricks by night, in stark contrast to his pampered early years in Beijing. He was born into the communist elite, but after his father fell out of favor with Mao Zedong ? and before his later rehabilitation, the younger Xi was sent to a rural hinterland to learn peasant virtues at age 15.

The Liangjiahe years are among the scant details known about Xi's life and personality partly because he himself chronicled them as a formative experience. They are part of the vague picture of a man who has drawn little attention during much of his political career but is now poised to become ruling party chief next month and president next year of an increasingly assertive China.

What is clear is that Xi has excelled at quietly rising through the ranks by making the most of two facets: He has an elite, educated background with links to communist China's founding fathers that are a crucial advantage in the country's politics, and at the same time he has successfully cultivated a common man mystique that helps him appeal to a broad constituency. He even gave up a promising Beiing post in his late 20s to go back out to countryside.

He did not at first come willingly, however, to Liangjiahe, a tiny community of cave dwellings dug into arid hills and fronted by dried mud walls with wooden lattice entryways. He tried to escape and was detained. Villagers remember a tall bookworm who eventually earned their respect.

"He was always very sincere and worked hard alongside us. He was also a big reader of really thick books," said Shi Chunyang, then a friend of Xi and now a local official.

It is in the nature of China's politics that relatively little is known about Xi's policy leanings. He is not associated with any bold reforms. Aspiring officials get promoted by encouraging economic growth, tamping down social unrest and toeing the line set by Beijing, not by charismatic displays of initiative.

Xi's resume in provincial posts suggest he is open to private industry and some administrative reforms as long as they don't jeopardize the Communist Party's monopoly on power. He likes Hollywood flicks about World War II and has a daughter at Harvard under an assumed name, though he has signaled he may be a staunch Chinese nationalist.

Tall, heavyset and married to a popular folk singer in the military, Xi is at ease in groups, in contrast to China's typically stiff and aloof leaders, such as current President Hu Jintao.

A Xi administration is expected to pursue a more forceful foreign policy based on Beijing's belief that its chief rival Washington is in decline and that China's rise to global pre-eminence is within reach.

"Xi was chosen in part because he has the large, assertive, confident personality to lead in that kind of strategy," said Andrew Nathan, an expert on Chinese politics at New York's Columbia University.

Xi will confront daunting challenges. After two decades of fast-paced growth and social change, the economy is flagging and China is under strain. A polarizing gap has left a few wealthy and many struggling and resentful. Rampant corruption is corroding already low reserves of public trust in officialdom.

Beyond home, China is locked in sharp elbowing over territory with Japan and Southeast Asian neighbors. At the same time, Beijing feels hemmed in by the U.S., which is shoring up ties with countries on China's edge.

As son of one-time Vice Premier Xi Zhongxun, the younger Xi spent the 1950s in a world of comfortable homes, chauffeur-driven cars and the best schools when most Chinese were desperately poor.

But the elder Xi fell afoul of the increasingly paranoid communist chief, and Mao demoted him in 1962. The son was dispatched to rural Shaanxi province in 1969 as part of Mao's campaign to toughen up educated urban youth during the chaotic Cultural Revolution. When caught returning to Beijing, he was sent to a labor camp for six months. Back in Liangjiahe, he helped build irrigation ditches.

"Knives are sharpened on the stone. People are refined through hardship," Xi said in a rare 2001 interview with a Chinese magazine. "Whenever I later encountered trouble, I'd just think of how hard it had been to get things done back then and nothing would then seem difficult."

Local Communist Party officials and police in Liangjiahe followed reporters on a visit and asked them to leave, showing how the party wants to control information about Xi's past. But they did allow brief interviews, including with Shi, described by villagers as Xi's former "iron buddy."

Shi stood across from the now-abandoned, one-room home where Xi lived with a local family, and recalled the day Xi departed at age 22. "No one wanted to see him go," Shi said.

Rejected for Communist Party membership nine times due to his father's political problems, Xi finally gained entry in 1974 and then attended the elite Tsinghua University.

He would later return to Liangjiahe only once, in 1992, when he gave an alarm clock to each household, Shi said.

Xi went on to earn a chemistry degree, by which time Mao had died and his father been restored to office. Xi next secured a plum position as secretary to Defense Minister Geng Biao, one of his father's old comrades.

But Xi took the unusual step three years later of jumping to a lowly post in rural Hebei province, because he wanted to "struggle, work hard, and really take on something big," Xi told Elite Youth magazine's now-deceased editor Yang Xiaohuai.

Xi landed in the rural town of Zhengding, where people traveled by horse cart.

While there, he made the most of state broadcaster China Central Television's plans to film an adaptation of the classical Chinese novel "Dream of Red Mansions." Hoping to create a tourist attraction, Xi built a full-scale reproduction of the sprawling estate at the heart of the tale.

"You could tell Xi was thinking ahead. By doing this, he created lots of jobs and lots of revenue for Zhengding back when there was very little here," said Liang Qiang, a senior caretaker at the film set, which still draws tourists.

Xi biked around town dressed like an army cook and insisted he be introduced only as county party secretary without reference to his family links, former colleague Wang Youhui recalled.

"He always paid for his food. He didn't want any special treatment," state media quoted Wang as saying years later.

Xi's elite background plugged him into to a web of personal connections that were especially important early in his career, ensuring support from Beijing for local projects. As party leader, Xi should easily command the respect of officials and the military, in part because of deference to his father's status.

At the same time, Xi's years in the provinces protect him from accusations of pure nepotism and lend him credibility as someone who understands the struggles of working Chinese and private businessmen who are creating the bulk of new jobs.

With help from his father, Xi jumped in 1985 to a vice mayorship in the port of Xiamen, then at the forefront of economic reforms. Over the next 17 years, he built a reputation for attracting investment and eschewing the banqueting expected of Chinese officials. He hung a banner saying "Get it done" in a provincial office lobby.

He later took the top position in neighboring Zhejiang province, a hotbed of private industry, a lively civil society, non-communist candidates for local assemblies and a thriving underground church movement. Xi was seen as allowing minor local administrative reforms, while not initiating any of them.

"He's not going to do anything to weaken party control, but at the least you can say he's concerned with the lives of farmers and ordinary people," said Li Baiguang, a human rights lawyer in Zhejiang at the time.

Xi tried to dramatically reverse the government's poor reputation for accountability by clearing a backlog of citizen complaints in a one-day blitz in the city of Quzhou. He set up 15 temporary offices to address complaints over land seizures, job benefits and other issues, drawing 300 petitioners and resolving 70 cases.

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson once called him a "guy who really knows how to get over the goal line."

After a brief spell in charge of Shanghai, Xi was brought to Beijing and handed the high-profile task of overseeing the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He's also in charge of managing relations with the former British colony of Hong Kong.

Some evidence of a strong nationalist streak emerged last month when he lectured U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on China's claim to East China Sea islands held by Japan.

"China's neighbors, including the U.S., should be prepared to see a Chinese government under Xi being more assertive than that under Hu," said Steve Tsang, director of the China Police Research Institute at Britain's University of Nottingham in Britain.

Xi's career has been lent a touch of glamor by his wife, folk singer Peng Liyuan, who for much of their marriage was far better known than he was. Although Xi isn't known to have visited his daughter at Harvard, Xi Mingze's American education adds to Xi's unusually rich exposure to the U.S., having made up to half-a-dozen trips to the country.

Xi, who likes the Hollywood film "Saving Private Ryan," showed a human side during his official visit to the U.S. earlier this year. He took in a Lakers game and stopped in Iowa to visit families who hosted him during a study tour there in 1985. Asked by LA school children about his hobbies, Xi listed reading, swimming, and watching sports, but said to laughter that finding more personal time was "mission impossible."

Former U.S. ambassador to Beijing Jon Huntsman said Xi is a man "who is quite different from Hu Jintao" in that Xi appears at ease.

"He's someone who you can connect with," Huntsman said.

Easiest Solutions To Help You Finally Give Up Smoking | ArticlePDQ ...

Set a specific date for you to quit smoking, and tell everyone you know what this big day will likely be. It?ll generate a sense of accountability on your side, one that you actually will be ashamed to not follow through with. You will be seen as a failure or someone who cannot control their actions. In addition, those around you can help you quit, if you give them the opportunity to do so.

Throw or give away all of your cigarettes or any other tobacco products. If you don?t have quick access to cigarettes, you won?t be tempted to have one last cigarette or even to go back to smoking when you really feel stressed. In addition, if you decide to smoke, you?ll must put more energy into getting tobacco and might change your mind by the time you can get it.

Write down the reasons why

you want to quit smoking. Post the list someplace where you?ll see it every day, to help keep you motivated. Include not only the reasons that directly benefit you, but also the reasons that quitting will benefit your friends and family. Being able to read your list every day will remind you of why you stopped smoking in the first place.

Do not quit alone. Tell everyone you around on regularly that you are trying to quit smoking. They can provide support and encouragement and it can make a huge difference. You might also consider a support group or a counselor. Behavior therapy can help you come up with and stick to strategies that will help you quit smoking.

Think about how good you felt before you smoked. Focus on how healthy, happy and active you were as a smoke-free child. Think about the foods you loved, the scents you loved and how fit you were, this will give you added incentive to stop smoking.

In order to quit smoking successfully, ask for help from the people you see most. Having the support of family, friends, and co-workers can mean the difference between success and failure. Quitting any habit is difficult, especially one like smoking that is addictive. Make sure the people around you cheer you on and do not intentionally thwart your success.

Though you will likely spend some money on aids to help you stop smoking, do not be discouraged by this. Remember the extraordinary cost of cigarettes and calculate how much you spend on a daily basis. Add up the days over the course of a year, and you will almost certainly be spending less on the methods you choose to help you stop this dangerous habit once and for all.

Best Way To Quit Smoking

The best way to quit smoking if you are able to is to quit cold turkey. While that can be somewhat difficult, it is possible, and you can do it. It can take dedication, willpower, and determination. You must decide for yourself that it is the best thing for you. It is quite hard, and it is harder to give up cold turkey. However, if you are able to, its the greatest method to quit.

Smoking cigarettes is one of those love hate relationships. If you?ve traveled over to more of the hate than the love, you may finally be ready. This article was geared to make you figure out what it is going to take for you to finally stop. ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model; keyboard dock included

ASUS VivoTab RT tablet arrives October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model keyboard dock included

In case you haven't heard, a lot -- and we mean a lot -- of Windows devices are going on sale this week. Today it's ASUS' turn to give its lineup a formal coming-out party: the company is hosting a press event here in New York City, where it just announced the dockable VivoTab RT will be available on October 26th, starting at $599 for the 32GB model, keyboard included. Alternatively, you can buy the 64GB tablet and docking station for $699. As we previously reported, an LTE version is coming to AT&T. Finally, ASUS says it will also sell the tablet and dock individually, but we haven't yet learned final pricing for those items. We'll update this post when we do.

If this is your first introduction to the VivoTab RT, here's a quick recap: it basically offers everything people loved about ASUS' Android-based Transformer tablets, except it runs Windows RT instead. Like the Infinity and other recent ASUS tablets, it has a 600-nit Super IPS+ display, offering 178 viewing angles and Gorilla Glass protection. Other specs include a quad-core Tegra 3 chip (the new T30, to be exact), 2GB of RAM, NFC and an 8-megapixel rear camera with an auto-focusing f/2.2 lens. Then there's that keyboard dock, which has a USB 2.0 port and built-in battery rated for seven hours. (The tablet itself is said to last up to nine hours.) Finally, of course, as a Windows RT device it comes loaded with all of the same stock applications you'll find in full Windows 8 (Mail, IE 10, etc.), along with Office 2013 Home & Student. The main difference: you won't be able to install legacy Windows programs.

The VivoTab RT arrives the same day as the Surface for Windows RT and indeed, we'll be eager to compare the two, especially since pricing for the keyboard-tablet bundles is identical. In fact, ASUS sent us one to test, and you can expect a review any day now. Until then, we've embedded some press photos below, in case you're just getting your first look.

Armstrong stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles

UCI: 'Armstrong has no place in cycling and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling'

NBC News and news services

updated 11:48 a.m. ET Oct. 22, 2012

GENEVA - Forget the seven Tour de France victories. Forget the yellow jersey celebrations on the Champs Elysees. Forget the name that dominated the sport of cycling for so many years.

As far as cycling's governing body is concerned, Lance Armstrong is out of the record books.

Once considered the greatest rider in Tour history, the American was cast out Monday by his sport, formally stripped of his seven titles and banned for life for his involvement in what U.S. sports authorities describe as a massive doping program that tainted all of his greatest triumphs.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling," said Pat McQuaid, the president said of the International Cycling Union. "This is a landmark day for cycling."

McQuaid announced that his group, known as UCI, accepted sanctions imposed by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and would not appeal them to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. McQuaid said he was "sickened" by some of the evidence detailed by USADA in its 200-page report and hundreds of pages of supporting testimony and documents.

The condemnation by cycling's most senior official confirmed Armstrong's pariah status, after the UCI had backed Armstrong at times in trying to seize of the doping investigation from USADA. McQuaid said the UCI endorsed a life ban for Armstrong after almost two weeks studying the American agency's evidence, and will meet Friday to discuss going after his 2000 Olympic bronze medal.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme said he no longer considers Armstrong to be a champion from 1999-2005 and wants him to pay back his prize money.

"We wish that there is no winner for this period," he said in Paris. "For us, very clearly, the titles should remain blank. Effectively, we wish for these years to remain without winners."

Armstrong's representatives had no immediate comment, but the rider was defiant in August as he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings. He argued the process was rigged against him.

"I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours," Armstrong said then. "The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that."

USADA said Armstrong should be banned and stripped of his Tour titles for "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams. He will lose all his race results since August 1998.

The agency welcomed the decision by UCI, following months of sparring between the two organizations.

"Today, the UCI made the right decision in the Lance Armstrong case," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in a statement, which called on cycling to continue to fight doping. "There are many more details of doping that are hidden, many more doping doctors, and corrupt team directors and the omerta has not yet been fully broken."

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, including that he pressured them to take banned drugs.

"I was sickened by what I read in the USADA report," McQuaid said, singling out the testimony of former teammate David Zabriskie. "The story he told of how he was coerced and to some extent forced into doping is just mind boggling."

Armstrong denies doping, saying he passed hundreds of drug tests - he has claimed as many as 500. UCI conducted 218 tests and there were another 51 by USADA, although they are not the only drug-testing bodies. USADA's report, released earlier this month, was aimed at showing why the agency ordered the sanctions against him.

"At the moment Lance Armstrong hasn't admitted to anything, yet all the evidence is there in this report that he doped," McQuaid said.

On Sunday, Armstrong greeted about 4,300 cyclists at his Livestrong charity's fundraiser bike ride in Texas, telling the crowd he's faced a "very difficult" few weeks.

"I've been better, but I've also been worse," Armstrong, a cancer survivor, told the crowd.

While drug use allegations have followed the 41-year-old Armstrong throughout much of his career, the USADA report has badly damaged his reputation. Longtime sponsors Nike, Trek Bicycles and Anheuser-Busch dropped him last week, and Armstrong also stepped down last week as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer awareness charity he founded 15 years ago after surviving testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.

After the UCI decision Monday, another longtime Armstrong sponsor, Oakley sunglasses, cut ties with the rider.

Armstrong's astonishing return from life-threatening illness to the summit of cycling offered an inspirational story that transcended the sport. However, his downfall has ended "one of the most sordid chapters in sports history," USADA said in its report published two weeks ago.

The decision to create a seven-year hole in the record books marks a shift from how organizers treated similar cases in the past.

When Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory for a doping violation, organizers awarded the title to Andy Schleck. In 2006, Oscar Pereiro was awarded the victory after the doping disqualification of American rider Floyd Landis.

USADA also thinks the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium, such was the level of doping during Armstrong's era.

The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

The world's most famous cyclist could still face further sports sanctions and legal challenges. Armstrong could lose that 2000 Olympic time-trial bronze medal and may be targeted with civil lawsuits from ex-sponsors or even the U.S. government.

McQuaid said the UCI's board will meet Friday to discuss the Olympic issue and whether to update other race results due to Armstrong's disqualifications.

The IOC said in a statement it would study the UCI's response and wait to receive their full decision.

"It is good to see that all parties involved in this case are working together to tackle this issue," the IOC said.

A so-called "Truth and Reconciliation" commission, which could offer a limited amnesty to riders and officials who confessed to doping practices, will also be discussed, UCI legal adviser Philippe Verbiest said.

In total, 26 people - including 15 riders - testified to USADA that Armstrong and his teams used and trafficked banned substances and routinely used blood transfusions. Among the witnesses were loyal sidekick George Hincapie and admitted dopers Tyler Hamilton and Landis.

USADA's case also implicated Italian sports doctor Michele Ferrari, depicted as the architect of doping programs, and longtime coach and team manager Johan Bruyneel. Ferrari - who has been targeted in an Italian prosecutor's probe - and another medical official, Dr. Luis Garcia del Moral, received lifetime bans.

Bruyneel, team doctor Pedro Celaya and trainer Jose "Pepe" Marti opted to take their cases to arbitration with USADA. The agency could call Armstrong as a witness at those hearings.

Bruyneel, a Belgian former Tour de France rider, lost his job last week as manager of the RadioShack-Nissan Trek team which Armstrong helped found to ride for in the 2010 season.

Forrester: Windows 8 Will Just ?Stop The Shrinking? ? Won?t Take Hold Until 2014

windows8Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett predicts that Microsoft's Windows 8 will get off to a slow start in 2013, but will take hold in 2014. Windows 8, Gillett argues, will keep Microsoft relevant on the PC, but it will remain "simply a contender in tablets, and a distant third in smartphones." Windows 8, he says, will "simply stop the shrinking," but it won't be a fix.

Music Review: Taylor Swift's 'Red' is mediocre

Taylor Swift, "Red" (Big Machine Records)

Taylor Swift's "Red," the Grammy winner's fourth album, is a 16-track set that has the singer continuing to step away from her country roots to take on a more rock and pop sound. The album features songs that are big and stadium ready (she has a U2-like moment on album opener, "State of Grace") and others that are soft and slow.

But while "Red" contains its share of winners, many of the songs lack the colorfulness and vitality the album title suggests, leading to an overall letdown. Lyrically and sonically, the album lacks oomph and feeling: It sounds like we've heard it all from her before (check "Starlight").

Hooking up with some new ? and popular ? producers seemed like a good move for Swift, who has worked with a supertight group of writers and producers on her first three albums (half of "Red" is produced by her longtime producer Nathan Chapman). Unfortunately, stepping out of her comfort zone doesn't always work.

Max Martin and Shellback, who have helmed No. 1 smashes for Maroon 5, Pink, Kelly Clarkson and others, have given Swift her first No. 1 pop hit with the juvenile-sounding anthem "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which echoes Avril Lavigne in her teen years. "22," another Martin and Shellback collaboration, is an improvement, but not by much, with weak lines like: "Everything will be all right if we just keeping dancing like we're 22." The producers fare better on "I Knew You Were Trouble.," an adventurous track with Swift taking the bull by the horns, sounding aggressive over an electrified and electronic beat.

Jeff Bhasker, best known for producing the breakout album by fun. and songs for Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey and others, is behind average songs like "Holy Ground" and "The Lucky One." Swift also works with Dan Wilson, a singer who has co-written two of music's best songs with the Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice" and Adele's "Someone Like You." His song with Swift, "Treacherous," is a good one.

The main issue with "Red" is that it sounds empty. There's nothing close to the country-soul ballads like the heart-wrenching "You're Not Sorry" and "White Horse" from her "Fearless" album, or even the emotion ? and magic ? on songs like "Never Grow Up" and "Enchanted" from 2010's "Speak Now." She gets close to reaching those touching heights on "I Almost Do" and the album's duets. English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran ? and Swift's falsetto ? shine on "Everything Has Changed," produced by Butch Walker (Lavigne, Pink, Dashboard Confessional). On "The Last Time," Swift takes a back seat to Snow Patrol lead singer Gary Lightbody, whose heavy and gravely vocals ride beautifully over the haunting beat, courtesy of producer Jacknife Lee. Too bad there's not more where that came from.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: "The Last Time" is refreshing.

Parenting and temperament in childhood predict later political ideology

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Political mindsets are the product of an individual's upbringing, life experiences, and environment. But are there specific experiences that lead a person to choose one political ideology over another?

New research from psychological scientist R. Chris Fraley of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and colleagues suggest that parenting practices and childhood temperament may play an influential role. Their study is published online in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Existing research suggests that individuals whose parents espoused authoritarian attitudes toward parenting (e.g., valuing obedience to authority) are more likely to endorse conservative values as adults. And theory from political psychology on motivated social cognition suggests that children who have fearful temperaments may be more likely to hold conservative ideologies as adults. Unfortunately, almost all of the existing research looking at these two factors suffers from significant methodological shortcomings. Specifically, the majority of this research has been retrospective -- relying on adult's recollections of their early temperaments and their early caregiving experiences.

To better understand the developmental antecedents of political ideology, Fraley and his colleagues examined data from 708 children who originally participated in the National Institute on Child Health and Human Development's (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD).

When the children in the study were one month old, their parents answered questions from the Parental Modernity Inventory. Fraley and colleagues used their responses to determine the degree to which the parents demonstrated authoritarian (e.g., "Children should always obey their parents") and egalitarian parenting attitudes (e.g., "Children should be allowed to disagree with their parents").

The dataset also included mothers' assessments of their children's temperaments when they were 4.5 years old, using questions from the Children's Behavior Questionnaire. From these assessments, the researchers identified five temperament factors: restlessness-activity, shyness, attentional focusing, passivity, and fear.

Consistent with theory from political psychology, Fraley and colleagues found that children with authoritarian parents were more likely to have conservative attitudes at age 18, even after accounting for their gender, ethnic background, cognitive functioning, and socioeconomic status. Children who had parents with egalitarian parenting attitudes, on the other hand, were more likely to hold liberal attitudes as young adults.

In terms of temperament, children with higher levels of fearfulness at 54 months were more likely to be conservative at age 18, while children with higher levels of activity or restlessness and higher levels of attentional focusing were more likely to espouse liberal values at that age.

The researchers argue that their work has wide-ranging implications for understanding the variation in political orientation. According to Fraley, "One of the significant challenges in psychological science is understanding the multiple pathways underlying personality development. Our research suggests that variation in how people feel about diverse topics, ranging from abortion, military spending, and the death penalty, can be traced to both temperamental differences that are observable as early as 54 months of age, as well as variation in the attitudes people's parents have about child rearing and discipline." They believe that an important direction for future research will be to delve deeper into exploring the underlying mechanisms -- including shared genetic variation and parent-child conflict -- that might link parenting attitudes and temperament to later political ideology.

"We hope that this work will help enrich theory at the interface of political and personality science but also underscore the value of studying these issues from a developmental perspective," the authors write.

The study was co-authored by Brian Griffin of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Jay Belsky of the University of California, Davis, King Abdulaziz University, and Birkbeck, University of London; and Glenn Roisman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

(AP) ? It's a landslide for President Barack Obama ? at least among people too young to vote.

Nickelodeon's Linda Ellerbee said Monday that the president captured 65 percent of the vote to beat Republican Mitt Romney in the network's "Kids Pick the President" vote. More than 520,000 people cast online ballots through the children's network's website over one week earlier this month.

Since it began in 1988, the kids have presaged the adults' vote all but once, when more youngsters voted for John Kerry over George W. Bush in 2004.

Obama answered questions submitted by Nickelodeon viewers for a special earlier this month. Romney didn't participate.
