Realogy Hosts Enrollment for the American ... - Franchising.com

Realogy is the First Company to Hold an Open Public Enrollment for Study Aimed at Finding Cancer Causes and Prevention

PARSIPPANY, N.J., 01-17-2013 -?Realogy Holdings Corp. (NYSE: RLGY), a global leader in real estate franchising and provider of real estate brokerage, relocation and settlement services, is proud to announce that it was the first company to host an open public enrollment for the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). The enrollment at Realogy's Parsippany headquarters was one of the American Cancer Society?s most successful, with 92 people volunteering to take part in the study.

The American Cancer Society's ultimate goal of CPS-3 is to enroll 300,000 volunteers ? men and women from various racial/ethnic backgrounds from across the U.S. ? to better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. The first CPS discovered the link between smoking and cancer, while CPS-2 discovered the link between obesity and cancer.

"Cancer is a word heard too often in our lives. That is why fighting back against this disease with our long-time partner, Realogy, was a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Northwest New Jersey residents," said Robin Albers, regional vice president of the American Cancer Society. "Realogy is passionate about this community and committed to fighting cancer. They took on this challenge and stood apart from other corporations, Realogys dedication allowed everyone from all over the Garden State to get involved in this lifesaving cancer research."

In 2012, The CEO Roundtable on Cancer accredited Realogy with the CEO Cancer Gold Standard? recognizing its efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for their employees and covered family members by promoting healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging early detection through cancer screenings and ensuring access to quality treatment.

"Health and wellness is a priority at Realogy, which is evidenced by our employees' positive response to the American Cancer Society's call for volunteers, and we hope other companies will follow our lead," said Dave Weaving, chief administrative officer, Realogy. "Thanks to the American Cancer Society, which has done a tremendous job organizing this study, we will most likely realize new and important discoveries to help us overcome this deadly disease."

For more information about CPS-3, visit cancer.org/cps3, email cps3@cancer.org, or call toll-free 1.888.604.5888.

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation?s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. Samsung Galaxy S4 specs to see wireless charging feature

Ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S4 release date, new reports have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S4 specs sheet will see wireless charging capabilities feature.

Although the cable-free charging option will reportedly not come as standard on the Samsung Galaxy S3 follow-on, latest Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours have claimed the South Korean manufacturer will make an optional Samsung Galaxy S4 wireless charging dock and compatible back panel for the handset available separately.

With latest reports suggesting the handset will host advanced resonant magnetic coupling wireless technologies, reports out of Samsung?s native Korea have stated that the ?Galaxy S4 provides wireless charging capabilities.?

A rough translation of the reports adds that the ?wireless receiving terminal was built at the rear of the unit. The wireless charging receiving coil is placed in the rear case.

?Samsung wireless charger [and] wireless charging receiving coil case is scheduled to be sold separately.?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Rumours
One of the most hotly anticipated handsets reportedly in the works, Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours have reached fever pitch in recent weeks with the as yet unconfirmed device expected to line up in the coming months as a true dominant force on the smartphone scene.

With recent Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours claiming the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first handset to support the company?s newly unveiled eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, former claims that the device will also play host to a flexible display have been largely brushed off.

Whilst leaked Samsung Galaxy S4 pictures have suggested the handset will rid itself of a physical home button in favour of a completely touchscreen interface, further mooted Samsung Galaxy S4 specs are reportedly set to see the handset boast 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera.

What would you like to see feature on the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S4? Would wireless charging capabilities be on your wish list? Let us know via the Trusted Reviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.

Preparedness Pantry - Food Storage, Emergency Preparedness ...

Welcome!

We?re glad you are here.? If you are new to preparedness or ?prepping?, this is a great place to start.? Please keep reading.? Here we?re going to discuss the whys for getting prepared, and recommend some ways to get started.? It can feel daunting, but with a little insight and direction, we hope to arm you with the information you need to move forward and make the preparations that fit you and your situation. If you?re a more experienced ?prepper? and are looking for specific information, follow the links below to lots of articles, blog posts, and other sites that are brimming with prepping principles, knowledge, tips, and ideas. If an emergency happened right this minute, how would you fare? Think about how much you depend on an ever-present supply of electricity, water, food, heat, the ability to travel and communicate, and a place to lay our head.? What if?due to circumstances beyond your control?any one or two of those were lost?? What if they all were? Most threats come from Mother Nature.? Depending on where you live, earthquakes, hurricanes, ice storms, flooding, or tornadoes can play a major role in people?s lives and plans. Everyone is susceptible to fires, power outages, economic changes or disruptions?and often on a very personal level: job loss, divorce, or physical disability due to accident or illness all too often turns the lives of individuals and families upside down. It is Emergency Essentials? goal to offer products and information that will help you take care of yourself and those who may depend on you should the conveniences we rely on every day be taken away or lost. By making the necessary preparations, you can have the confidence of knowing you and your family will have their needs met in an emergency, whether it is an economic, man-made, or natural disaster. All of our recommendations are based on several ?what ifs?.? What if your water was cut off? Or what if your electricity was cut off?? We?re not talking the occasional thunderstorm or power line maintenance everyone experiences, but something longer lasting, like the 4 million people from Virginia to Ohio that lost their electricity for several days and up to a few? weeks in July of 2012? What if your home were so damaged from an earthquake you had to evacuate?? What if your entire community had to evacuate due to flooding such as happened August 29, 2005 in New Orleans? As a result of Hurricane Katrina, everyone had to leave their homes and evacuate via the routes out of town that weren?t already cut off by damage. Those evacuees had to seek temporary shelter for weeks?even months. It?s easy to say to yourself, ?But it won?t happen to me.? And that may or may not be true?there?s no way to predict what will happen when or where. But consider the following statement by Richard Gist, psychologist for the Kansas City Fire Department: ?Do not put off the improbable for the unthinkable. [?] If there is a one in a million chance of something happening to you then it is happening to 300 people in this country right now.? The bottom line is: unfortunate things happen all the time?and you?re the first and best defense for caring for yourself and your family. Emergency Essentials has been helping people prepare for over 25 years.? Our supplies have been there for families and agencies across the nation for a long time.? Our food and gear have provided relief and security for people across the country. ?We strive to provide not only quality products but also a ?Low Price Guarantee.? We think our Mission Statement says it all: "To help people prepare. To serve our customers, fellow employees, business associates, etc. in exactly the same way we would want to be served. To use the resources that we have been given to serve, build, and inspire our community."

First, you need a plan. Then, some water, followed by an emergency kit, some food, and finally some skills and other supplies.

Having a plan is fundamental in emergency preparedness; a plan is your road map for navigating the unknown issues that can arise. You and your family should make a plan together and practice it regularly so everyone knows exactly what to do in any emergency. You can download a FREE customizable emergency and evacuation plan at www.beprepared.com/downloads. Fill it out, give it a whirl, then talk to your family about what worked and what didn?t. Practicing your plan gives you an idea of what is realistic, what steps are unnecessary, and how well each member of the family can follow the plan without help. Water is probably the most important thing to consider as you make emergency plans. If water is cut off in an emergency, you?ll need to have water on hand for drinking, cooking, cleaning, first aid, and sanitation. If you had to make the choice between storing water or food, choose water. Without a good source of clean, drinkable water, you simply won?t survive very long. You can last for weeks without food, but much less without water. FEMA recommends storing a minimum of 1 gallon of water per person per day for two weeks.? One gallon will only provide enough water for drinking and light sanitation (e.g., a sponge bath and brushing your teeth), so it?s wise to store more if you have the space.? For comparison, the average person normally uses 70 gallons per day. You will need to store portable water designed to take with you in an emergency and permanent water in case the emergency allows you to stay at home. Besides this stored water, you will also need ways to purify and filter water. Should your regular supply become contaminated or run out, you?ll need to find alternate sources, which may or may not be safe to drink without filtering and treatment. ?With a good way to filter and purify water, you can use water from local rivers, lakes, or other water sources if necessary. (we need a link here to take them to our water pages) The next vital part of your preparedness is having an emergency kit to meet your needs during the first days of an emergency. ?That means food, water, light, communication, first aid, shelter, warmth, clothing, money, medications, and any other items you need on a day-to-day basis in order to survive. Your kit should be light enough to carry if you have to evacuate on foot, yet comprehensive enough to ensure you can meet your needs. Your emergency kit will see you through the first few days of an emergency if you?re unable to stay at home. ?FEMA and other agencies used to recommend a 3 day kit, but after Hurricane Katrina, it was obvious that folks waited to get help for much longer than 3 days.? Now the recommendation is to prepare for as many days as is reasonable, considering that you may have to carry your supplies with you.? The main idea is to have what you?ll need until help arrives. The next item on your preparedness priority list should be food. In an emergency you?ll need to keep up your strength and energy more than ever, and building up a good supply of food storage is crucial in making that a reality. The basic principles of food storage are the same as with water?your first step is to get enough for the first several days of a crisis as a minimum supply, and increase your supply from there until you have enough for a week, two weeks, and finally up to 3 months of the normal food you eat. Then add the basics: grains, legumes, salt, milk, sugar or honey, oil and garden seeds until you?ve accumulated a year supply. Once you have these basics, add other dehydrated and freeze-dried foods to complete your supply.? While building this supply, think about how many calories each person will need on a daily basis, and plan to meet those requirements. Don?t forget to include some cooking equipment in your emergency supplies. At minimum you?ll need a way to boil water, since most food storage requires water for re-hydration. Think about the foods you have (or will have) in storage, and add cooking methods that will best suit your supply and your cooking style. Many people have additional worries about food storage?whether they?re doing it right, whether they?re getting quality products, whether? they?re getting a good deal?and they need some extra direction. Food storage is the most expensive part of emergency preparedness, so knowledge and research will pay off in significant ways?not only in cost savings, but ensuring that you have food storage that works for your lifestyle and nutritional needs. Gaining this knowledge can seem tricky or overwhelming. That?s why Emergency Essentials created the 15 Tips for Food Storage Shopping. These tips will give you a great knowledge base about food storage, so you will know what to look for, what questions to ask, and what items will be the best fit for you and your family. Find the tips here.
Once you?ve got a 3-day kit, a water supply, and a food supply, you?re well on your way. But there are some other supplies you?ll want to consider in case of an emergency:

????????? Shelter and bedding (tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, etc.)
????????? Cash, coins, and an emergency debit or credit card
????????? A well-equipped First Aid kit
????????? Medications needed on a daily basis by members of your family
????????? A way to charge electronics like cell phones, tablets, radios, or other items if the electricity is out
????????? Candles, lanterns, headlamps, and/or flashlights ? plus plenty of extra batteries
????????? Replacement items for crucial equipment?contacts, glasses, medical equipment, cooking equipment, fuel, etc.
????????? Items that will help family members relax and stay calm during stressful emergencies: music, games, art supplies, paper and pencils, books, etc.

Having kits, water, food, and other items stored for an emergency puts you way ahead of the curve. While you?re working on gathering and storing all these supplies (most people can?t do it all at once), also take time to learn some skills that will be useful in an emergency. Below are just a handful of skills that would be valuable in an emergency. Think about conditions in your area, and consider what kind of skills might be useful if you had to survive there during different times of the year.

????????? Knot-tying
????????? Foraging your local plant life for food or first aid remedies
????????? Starting a fire
????????? Cooking from scratch
????????? Gardening
????????? Canning and dehydrating foods at home
????????? Navigation with a compass
????????? Basic auto repair skills
????????? CPR and other First Aid skills
????????? Emergency non-traditional communication skills (like Ham radio operation)

So, can you do it? Of course you can. We?ll be here to help you every step of the way. We?ve been helping people prepare for 25 years?that?s what we do. For more preparedness resources, including products, tips, recipes, and articles, visit us on any of our online pages:

Hasbro Twister Dance Review - Shopping and Product Reviews

    Twister Dance

Playing games together as a family is something we love to do. And I in this week had the chance for my family to play the new Twister Dance Game from Hasbro. Now I am sure everyone is familiar with classic Twister, which is a fun party game. But now that I am older and less flexible there is no way I can twist my body into the pretzel positions that game requires! In addition the vinyl mat for Twister never folds up neatly and fits back in the box, so we rarely get it out to play. This Hasbro Twister Dance doesn?t require impossible body contortions, and it has separate Twister spots, not a huge vinyl mat.

The idea of Twister dance is to combine today?s best dance music with the iconic Twister spots and learn moves to today?s hot new dance songs. The way it works is that you arrange the spots on the carpet, and then follow the directions of the Twister Dance Console by watching the multicolored LED lights. The console only directs your feet, so you can do your own hand and arm movements and don?t have to worry about becoming a tangled mess like in the original Twister. The Twister Dance game comes with 5 built in songs:

    • ?Till the World Ends,? TWISTER REMIX, performed by Britney Spears.
    • ?Whip My Hair,? performed by Willow Smith.
    • ?We R Who We R,? performed by Ke$ha.
    • ?Cupid Shuffle,? performed by Cupid.
    • And an exclusive track, ?Caught Up in a Twister.?

Of course only 5 songs would get boring fast, so you can hook any mp3 player up to the game, and dance to your own songs. ?It has a built in algorithm to detect the beat of the song and determine moves that go with it. ?All in all it is very clever, and fun to play with. ?I like the fact that there is no winner in the game, so there are fewer conflicts. ?My 16 year old is a dancer, so whenever we play a dance game she wins easily. ?This just means no one ever wants to play with her, which annoys her. ?With Twister Dance there is no winner, so there are no hurt feelings!

Confusion over military raid to end hostage crisis

The Irish Times - Friday, January 18, 2013

    RUADH?N Mac CORMAIC in Paris

Even as Algeria announced the end of its military operation to regain control of its desert gas refinery last night, there were conflicting reports as to what took place earlier in the country?s remote southern desert to end the hostage crisis.

French president Fran?ois Hollande, after speaking to his counterparts in Algiers, Washington, London and other capitals yesterday, said events had taken a ?dramatic turn? ? a reference to an apparent assault carried out by the Algerian military in the afternoon.

Twenty-five foreign hostages escaped and six were killed, Algerian media reported, but other sources put the death toll at up to 34.

    Hostages ?still held??

Mauritania?s ANI news agency, which claimed to be in contact with the kidnappers, earlier said seven hostages were still being held after the Algerian operation: two Americans, three Belgians, one Japanese and one Briton.

Algerian soldiers had surrounded the installation since Wednesday morning, when Islamist militants seized 41 western workers and at least 150 Algerians at the site near In Amenas, about 100 km from the border with Libya.

The alert was raised just after 5am, when a bus carrying workers to a local airport was attacked about 3km from the plant. The bus?s police escort repelled the militants, who were said to be heavily armed, but at least two people ? a British citizen and an Algerian ? were killed in the firefight.

According to the Algerian government, the bus then travelled on to In Amenas, where the injured were treated at an on-site hospital.

Travelling in at least three vehicles, the militants then drove on to the plant, where they took hostages inside a wing of the living quarters. Several shots were heard when the militants entered the site, an unnamed hostage told France?s Le Figaro newspaper by telephone. According to this witness, the militants were armed with rocket-propelled grenades and told the hostages they had mined the area.

When the alarm was raised, Algerian troops backed by helicopters encircled the site, and the government ruled out negotiations with the kidnappers.

As news of the crisis made its way across the world, a number of states, including Ireland, Norway, Japan, the United States and the UK, said their citizens were among the hostages. A French catering firm said 150 of its Algerian staff were also caught up in the incident.

Governments set up crisis centres to co-ordinate their response, but Algeria took charge of the operation and, in a fast-evolving situation playing out in one of the most remote parts of Algeria, much of the information that filtered out was contradictory or unreliable.

    Veteran guerrilla?

Algerian interior minister Daho Ould Kablia said the kidnappers were led by Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a veteran Islamist guerrilla who fought Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s and had set up his own group in the Sahara after falling out with other local al-Qaeda-linked leaders.

Before the Algerian military began its attack, the hostage-takers appear to have allowed some prisoners to speak to the media. An unidentified hostage who spoke to France 24 television said prisoners were forced to wear explosive belts and captors had threatened to blow up the plant.

It was not clear if these interviewees were speaking under duress, however.

One eyewitness, a local man who was among those who escaped during the assault, said the kidnappers told Algerian staff they would not harm Muslims but would kill western hostages they called ?Christians and infidels?.

The escapee, Abdelkader (53), was quoted by the news agency Reuters as saying the militants appeared to have good knowledge of the layout of the complex and the language of radical Islam.

?I am still choked, and stressed,? he said, adding that he feared many of his foreign colleagues may have died. ?The terrorists seemed to know the base very well,? he said, ?Moving around, showing that they knew where they were going.?

    Tactics criticised?

Within hours of the Algerian assault, and with the results still unclear, criticism was already emerging last night of the tactics used by the authorities.

British prime minister David Cameron?s spokesman said he was only informed of the operation once it had got under way and that Britain ?would have preferred to have been consulted in advance.?

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe called his opposite number in Algeria to request a halt to the operation.

In the first official comments from the Algerian side, a government spokesman confirmed some hostages were killed in the operation but said troops had been forced to act to free them after talks with their captors failed.

(AP) ? The Pentagon is stepping up aid for Mexico's bloody drug war with a new U.S.-based special operations headquarters to teach Mexican security forces how to hunt drug cartels the same way special operations teams hunt al-Qaida, according to documents and interviews with multiple U.S. officials.

Such assistance could help newly elected Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto establish a military force to focus on drug criminal networks that have terrorized Mexico's northern states and threatened the Southwest border. Mexican officials say warring drug gangs have killed at least 70,000 people between 2006 and 2012.

Based at the U.S. Northern Command in Colorado, Special Operations Command-North will build on a commando program that has brought Mexican military, intelligence and law enforcement officials to study U.S. counterterrorist operations from the U.S. to the war zones, to show them how special operations troops built an interagency network to target al-Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden and his followers.

The special operations team within Northcom will be turned into a new headquarters, led by a general instead of a colonel, and established in a Dec. 31 memo signed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. That move gives the group more autonomy and the number of people could eventually triple from 30 to 150, meaning the headquarters could expand its training missions with the Mexicans, even though no new money is being assigned to the mission.

The special operations program has already helped Mexican officials set up their own intelligence center in Mexico City to target criminal networks, patterned after similar centers in war zones built to target al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Iraq, two current U.S. officials said.

Mexican and U.S. military officials played down the change, and it's unclear whether the Mexican government will agree to boost its training.

"We are merely placing a component commander in charge of things we are already doing," said Northcom spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis in a written statement.

Mexico's Foreign Affairs Department emailed a statement saying it had been briefed on the changes, and had no further comment

The creation of the new command marks another expansion of Adm. Bill McRaven's special operations empire, as he seeks to migrate special operators from their decade of service in war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan to new missions, even as the rest of the military fights post-war contraction and multi-billion-dollar budget cuts.

The new headquarters will also coordinate special operations troops when needed for domestic roles like rescuing survivors after a natural disaster, or helping the U.S. Coast Guard strike ships carrying suspect cargo just outside U.S. territorial waters, according to multiple current and former U.S. officials briefed on the mission. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the Pentagon has not formally announced the new headquarters.

The initial document petitioning Panetta for the command stresses the command's role in military-to-military cooperation with Mexico. The document was signed in September 2012 by McRaven and Northcom commander Gen. Charles Jacoby.

Northcom's current special operations training missions are an outgrowth of the Merida Initiative that was formalized in 2008, to provide extensive military assistance to Mexico. The extra special operations staff, including both troops and civilians, will help coordinate more missions as Mexico requests them, current and former officials said.

Pena Nieto is likely to welcome the continued training to help him build and coordinate the forces he needs to reduce drug violence, according to Rand Corp.'s Dr. Agnes Gereben Schaefer.

"He has talked about setting up a paramilitary force...made up of former military and police forces, which he has described as more surgical," than the current campaign by Mexican army and police, Schaefer said. He would dispatch the force into towns that have been overrun by drug violence, where police don't have the numbers to fight it, she said.

Mexican military, intelligence and law enforcement chiefs have already toured the Joint Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Bragg in North Carolina to see how U.S. officers coordinate efforts by special operations aircraft, naval vessels and air- and sea-based raiders, according to one current military official.

A small group of top Mexican military and intelligence officials also visited the command's targeting center at the Balad air base in Iraq before the U.S. troop withdrawal in 2011, a former U.S. official said.

U.S. officials stress that sharing this expertise does not mean U.S. special operations teams will be conducting raids against targets in Mexico, nor will they be entering the country with their own weapons. Mexico forbids U.S. military or law enforcement officers from carrying guns inside their borders, with few exceptions, though American commandos have conducted training missions in the past, two current and one former U.S. military official said. They were speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sensitive missions.

Greg Cote: NCAA probe of Miami Hurricanes makes mockery of term ?speedy trial?

I?m not sure what the University of Miami and its football program deserve more at this point from the NCAA: a notice of allegations or a letter of apology.

The ?speedy trial? clause of the Sixth Amendment at work in the real world evidently makes too much sense for college sports? judge and jury, and so UM continues to twist in the wind almost 2?1/2 years since Nevin Shapiro first arose publicly from his clandestine sewer bent on bringing down the Hurricanes.

In jurisprudence they say the longer it takes for charges to be brought, the weaker the case ? that at some point an ?investigation? dragging on and on begins to feel like a witch hunt, or to smell like desperation.

    Canes fans can only hope.

It was August 2010 when Shapiro, for years a rogue UM booster gone wild, first went public with all the improper benefits he had supposedly lavished upon dozens of players over several years. Yahoo! Sports? expos? one year later made the story national. Now, finally, the NCAA reportedly is close to wrapping its case and presenting its formal notice of allegations to the university.

Meanwhile, Miami is into its fourth calendar year living with this cloud, enjoying not the presumption of innocence but the assumption of guilt. Canes football (and to a much lesser degree men?s basketball) already has served what amounts to a substantial probation during which both reputation and recruiting have taken a hit ? along with the larger, self-imposed penalties already absorbed.

In effect, coach Al Golden already has served two seasons with hands cuffed, jailed, while awaiting trial for alleged crimes others committed. A class of UM football players guilty of nothing, accused of nothing, already has missed out on two bowl games because of self-imposed postseason bans ? plus the honor of playing in this season?s ACC Championship Game, a right earned on the field, then voluntarily sacrificed.

    Don?t get this wrong.

I am not saying ?oh poor Miami? and absolving the program of whatever its guilt may be. And I say this even with the knowledge Shapiro ? doing hard time for a $930 million Ponzi scheme, a pyramid inherently fabricated on lies ? might rank among a prosecutor?s least credible witnesses imaginable.

(That is why it was so ludicrous that NCAA investigators supposedly threatened former players that Shapiro?s claims against them would be automatically assumed true if they did not agree to be interviewed. First, that betrays the bedrock presumption of innocence. Second, if you?re going to flip a coin and believe somebody ? should it be the guy whose crime literally makes him a convicted liar? Really!? I?m just asking).

Even if one holds Shapiro as a maggot on life?s food chain, though, one must admit the detail of his allegations lends credence, and so, even more so, do the university?s preemptive actions.

You do not do what UM already has done in terms of volunteered penalties unless you are sure you have been guilty of something. In this case that would be a lack of institutional control in terms of identifying Shapiro as a reptile and stopping him sooner.

What I am saying here is that Miami already has substantially served its time and paid its price ? to a degree that sanctions yet to come should be modest. That is, if fairness still has a place among the NCAA?s intentions.

The United States and its allies from the G-8 group of leading nations are meeting in Washington this week to improve international cooperation on counterterrorism and anti-crime measures, including moves to stop the use of fertilizer in roadside bombs and measures to combat the growing encroachment of Latin American drug cartels in West Africa.

The Roma-Lyon Group of officials are meeting Tuesday to Thursday, the State Department said in a brief statement.

The G-8 nations are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the European Union.

The United States is represented at the meeting by Brian Nichols, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, and Anne Witkowsky, acting principal deputy coordinator for counterterrorism, who will co-chair the proceedings, the statement said.

Mr. Nichols? boss, William R. Brownfield, assistant secretary of state for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, will chair a side meeting about the situation in West Africa, a region that weak law enforcement and customs institutions have made an increasingly attractive transit point for Latin American drugs into Europe.

The side meeting will include ?key partners from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, and international organizations? in addition to the G-8 nations, according to the State Department.

The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in October but had to be postponed because of Hurricane Sandy.

Fortified by Global Warming, Deadly Fungus Poisons Corn Crops, Causes Cancer

Last year?s drought increased the spread of a carcinogenic mold called aspergillus (Aspergillus flavus), a fungal pathogen that poisons cattle, kills pets and has infected the 2012 corn crop, rendering significant portions of the harvest unfit for consumption. Whereas the deadly organism mainly affects countries like China and developing African nations, many U.S. states have experienced an increase in corn contamination since 2011. Farmers are likely to see more of the carcinogen as temperatures continue to rise and droughts become more frequent. ?It's really a climate variable issue,? says Barbara Stinson, founding and senior partner of Meridian Institute, a public policy organization. ?We're probably looking at an increase in aflatoxin as a result of that.? A. flavus releases toxic spores that can be fatal when ingested, prompting symptoms that include jaundice, liver cancer and internal bleeding. The poison is so deadly that in 1995 Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein confessed to weaponizing the mold spores for use in biological warfare. The high toxicity of the mold means crops with more than 20 parts per billion?the equivalent of about 100 kernels in a truckload of corn?can?t cross state lines, says Ronnie Heiniger, professor of cropping systems at North Carolina State University. That?s bad news for the agricultural industry, which suffers annual losses of more than $190 million due to aspergillus. Last year the green-black mold contaminated more than half the corn harvested in Missouri by October. In contrast, only 8 percent of the 2011 crop suffered, according to the Missouri Grain Inspection Service. ?We have a big aflatoxin problem,? says Charles Woloshuk, a botanist and plant pathologist at Purdue University. ?There are loads of corn coming to the [grain] elevators that have been rejected.? Grains like corn and cereals are well documented hosts of aspergillus, although the fungus is also found in oilseed, spices, tree nuts, groundnuts, milk, meat and dried fruit?all staples on which a significant portion of the world?s population rely for sustenance. Drought conditions don?t cause the mold, but they do help speed its expansion. Unlike the fuzzy stuff that grows on bathroom tiles or in the back of the garage, A. flavus prefers hot, dry climes?precisely like the drought afflicting more than half the U.S. Although the international community has adopted strict legislation to regulate the acceptable amount of aflatoxin for individual countries, cases of poisoning, called aflatoxicosis, still surface regularly. Because the level of aflatoxins found in any given load of corn can be higher than the legal maximum, farmers are allowed to mix contaminated corn with safe corn to dilute the amount?but sometimes contaminants slip through the cracks. ?That's always the problem with a contaminant at these low levels?the distribution of that contaminant in that load,? Heiniger says. ?The detection of these contaminants is almost more of an art than a science because you're searching for this one little kernel.? He adds, ?If you selected one bite from that whole area and happened to hit that one kernel you'd get the contaminant.? Aflatoxin contamination is a global food security issue, but it?s especially a problem in developing countries, which are often largely populated by subsistence farmers who don?t have the resources, technology or infrastructure needed for adequate grain testing. Lack of education about the effects of the mold also contributes to aflatoxicosis poisoning. ?The average person can?t tell whether the mold contains aflatoxin. You can?t tell if it?s highly toxic or an innocuous fungus,? Stinson says. ?So people are used to eating it and don?t know that they?re poisoning themselves or their children.? To make matters worse, aflatoxins react strongly to the hepatitis B virus (HBV), the most common cause of liver cancer in the world. In countries where HBV is endemic, such as in China and some African nations, ingesting the mold intensifies and speeds liver failure by acting as an immunosuppressant. Consequently, there are over 750,000 new reported cases of primary liver cancer reported yearly worldwide, making it the sixth most common cancer for humankind, according to 2008 statistics from the World Cancer Research Fund International. The cost in human life is likely due, in part, to international trade issues. Because aspergillus standards in developed countries are so high, African nations export much of their pure commodities overseas, leaving the tainted crops at home for consumption by locals. Natural disasters that increase foreign demand for African products?like floods and droughts in industrialized countries?only compound the issue. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) estimate more than five billion people worldwide are at risk for chronic exposure through contaminated foods, according to a March 2012 study published in PLoS One. ?Strict aflatoxin standards mean that many nations will export their best-quality foods and keep contaminated foods domestically, resulting in higher aflatoxin exposure in low- or middle-income nations where hepatitis prevalence is high,? wrote co-authors Felicia Wu and Hasan Guclu, both Pitt faculty members. Whereas the U.S. is most often spared the cost in human health, the repercussions aren?t nil. Dairy cows and cattle, already stressed from living in close proximity to large numbers of animals, are at particularly high risk for succumbing to aflatoxicosis, though they can handle higher doses of toxin. Pets, too, are susceptible to the poison. In 2007 aflatoxins forced a nationwide pet food recall?but not before dozens of man?s best friends fell ill and died. Researchers have not yet found an animal species immune to the aspergillus?s effects. The spores are so poisonous that even destroying the contaminated crops is an ordeal. Scientists worldwide keep careful tabs on aflatoxins in a large-scale effort to avoid outbreaks of aflatoxicosis, according to Stinson. ?Our understanding is that in some cases you can't even incinerate (contaminated food) safely because the aflatoxin can get airborne and be inhaled,? she says. ?If there is a high level of aflatoxin?they're going to be in the position of having to store and destroy crops.? Fernando Rodney Will Pitch In The Upcoming World Baseball Classic, And He Don?t Need No Stinkin? Permission To Do So

Fernando Rodney, World Baseball Classic January 14th. 2013, 1:24pm

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit TigersAccording to a report by Neftali Ruiz of elcaribe.com Fernando Rodney will pitch for the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (via Hardball Talk). And Rodney spoke about the thrill of representing his country and whether the Rays granted him permission (translation via Google translate)?

The star closer Fernando Rodney made ??the decision to represent the country in the World Baseball Classic and has two months preparing it.??I want to represent the country, will be a pleasure to be there with the Dominican uniform,? said Rodney, who was in Chosen the roster for the game Sunday against the Stars. Response to the question about the permission of the [Tampa Bay Rays], Rodney was clear. ?To represent the country does not need permission,? said the native of Samana to emphasize its decision.

Obviously if Major League Baseball is going to allow players to participate in the WBC, teams cannot keep players from choosing to play (outside of existing injury concerns). But you can imagine that most teams are probably strongly discouraging the participation of their pitchers. And one of the Rays? most important pitchers is going to be pushing himself hard when most other pitchers are just easing into shape.

Angela Lutin: Trying Online Dating After Divorce? Here Are 5 Ways ...

One of the biggest steps after divorce is deciding to begin online dating. Usually after months of internal arguments about how it could be dangerous or perceived as desperate, there is that one pivitotal moment after going out to a bar and meeting no one yet again, or worse, sitting home alone on a Saturday night.

An epiphany occurs. Could online dating be any worse that what I'm already doing?

Almost three years after my divorce, I finally came to that conclusion. I write an advice column and every week, more and more of the questions that were asked pertained to online dating. One night, with a few glasses of wine fueling my curiosity, I decided to create a profile. There were the necessary pictures needed, but I wasn't prepared for the essay portion. This felt like a combination job interview/therapy session/pageant questionnaire. Once I got through the hard part -- you know, the stuff that actually made me think about things like what I really wanted in a person -- the fun began. Sitting in front of your computer screen filtering potential dates by any criteria imaginable is powerful. You certainly can't walk into a bar and eliminate all but those over six feet tall with a career in finance. Online you can.

Don't be misled though. It's not as easy and magical as it seems. Ultimately, technology cannot replace chemistry and there are still a lot of frogs you'll end up emailing, texting, and meeting for coffee dates before you find the Prince or Princess of your dreams.

When clients come to me for help after deciding to get back into the dating game post divorce, one of the first rules I establish is setting up an online dating profile. Many of them have tried online dating before but gave up, citing a lack of responses. The ones they do receive are never from anyone whom they really were interested in meeting. My rebuttal? Don't blame the messenger. The problem lies in the message you're sending. I review profiles both as a dating coach and as member of the online dating community. What I can tell you is this: You are doing it all wrong. Just a few subtle changes can increase the responses, and subsequent dates, tenfold. Here are five that can be made today:

    1. Photos. You must have a photo. The photo should be of only you, and not with your ex-girlfriend, best friend, or children in the picture or cropped out. Have someone take an individual photo with a neutral background. Smile so you don't appear a possible serial killer. Provocative pictures bring unwanted attention and it makes you look easy. Absolutely under no circumstances should you use a mirror pic. (If you don't understand why then you need my coaching help asap.)

    2. ALL CAPS. Writing in all capital letters is universally acknowledged as screaming at someone. Why would you scream at someone you've never met? Turn the caps lock off and write sentences like a normal person. Which brings me to my next point...

    3. Misspelled Words. Don't say you're "financially secure" if you can't spell financially. I'm a horrible speller, but that's why I use spell check. Proof your profile for common grammatical mistakes like "your" for "you're."

    4. Incomplete Profiles. I know you are awesome and a picture alone should send gobs of would be suitors into your inbox, but that's not how it works. Opening up about your passions and what you are searching for is a really vulnerable thing to do. That's why most profiles are limited, and therefore, don't get responses. Communication is one of the core pillars of a successful relationship. If you can't communicate who you are or what you want from the start, chances are you won't be able to later. Your profile will get passed over.

    5. List of Don'ts. I don't like garlic. Or water sports. Or romantic comedies if I'm being honest. But I don't list that in my profile. More than anything else on this list, the quickest way to have someone not take a chance on you is by leading with your "don't, won't, and never happen" list. Negativity is not an attractive quality. I understand it is a burden to filter through the profiles of those that don't meet your criteria, but leading with "no'" instead of "yes" is never the way to finalize a sale.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Your dating profile is your first virtual impression. Make it count.

Fast and Curious: 1,202-socket HPC powers Japan research

To meet growing demand for delivering high-speed supercomputer services to researchers across Japan, Kyoto University has deployed a cluster supercomputer based on Intel?s Xeon processor E5 family and featuring a 1,202-Socket Subsystem and high-memory-capacity Subsystem with 1.5TB per Node.

As one of Japan?s national centers for shared access to IT infrastructure, the university?s Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies also conducts research into the building of advanced IT platforms for the future, explains Prof. Hiroshi Nakashima, Director of ACCMS.

??To keep up with other academic institutions around the world, it is important that we progress in line with the latest developments. In order to do this, we configure systems as Linux* clusters, an architecture that is in widespread use internationally.?

After comparing and testing machines from a number of vendors, they configured a large cluster system using an HPC server fitted with the Intel Xeon processor E5 family.?

One MPP, Two Clusters = 553 Tflops

The new HPC includes one massively parallel processor (MPP) system and two cluster systems, each comprising an InfiniBand* network and HPC server fitted with the Intel Xeon processor E5 family. The peak computational performance of the overall system is 553.9 TFlops.?

The Laurel subsystem has a high degree of compatibility with PC clusters, comprising 601 nodes with 64 GB of memory and 16 cores per node. It has a peak computational performance of 242.5 TFlops and total memory capacity of 38 TB (Figure 3). The Cinnamon subsystem has 16 nodes with 1.5 TB of memory and 32 cores per node.

Despite the small number of nodes, the large amount of memory per node means it will be used for applications that demand a large memory capacity. It has a theoretical peak computational performance of 10.6 TFlops and total memory capacity of 24 TB .

High Speed Analysis at Low Cost

While the Cinnamon subsystem, with its large memory capacity, has only improved node performance by about 20 to 30 percent, power consumption has been cut to one-tenth that of the system it is replacing. Also, the ability of the entire system to fit into a single rack means it takes up only one tenth as much space as the previous system.

The new system represents 7.9 times the computational performance, 6.1 times the memory capacity, and 5.7 times the overall physical capacity of its predecessor. The majority of use comes from science and engineering research, with examples of large simulations on which the center has collaborated including simulations of the cycle of major earthquake events and particle simulations of plasma environments. Applications include large scientific and technical computations, computational chemistry, structural analysis, statistical processing, and visualization.?

Flexibility is key.? Prof. Nakashima explains: ?The supercomputers made available by ACCMS can be used by all sorts of different research institutions in a variety of fields and disciplines. This means, rather than being mission-oriented, our service must maintain a highly versatile approach.??

    Clear Benefits to Researchers

The improvement in underlying performance means users can obtain the results of even large and complex calculations quickly and cost-efficiently. In an academic context, the faster speed will prove valuable because it allows calculations to be executed for more parameters than would otherwise be possible in the limited time available. The new system also has benefits for ACCMS in its role as a service provider.

Snow closes major California highway for hours

Police began escorting southbound cars through the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 ? a major north-south highway ? after a 16-hour shutdown.

The highway through Tejon Pass ? just 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles ? rises to 4,100 feet in the Tehachapi Mountains and frequently is shut down in winter by blowing snow and treacherous black ice on the roadway.

?There must have been 1,000 Mack trucks lined up,? Heidi Blood, 40, said early Friday.

In addition to the snow, morning temperatures fell into the 20s and 30s in many areas, and much lower in the mountains. Big Bear mountain resort east of Los Angeles recorded a low of 12 degrees F.

Napa, in the wine country, and Sacramento, farther north, both recorded 27.
