NFL Week 17 Checkdown: Adrian Peterson's superhuman feat sweeter with playoff berth

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson came up 9 yards short of the best single-season rushing total in NFL history on Sunday. But his 199-yard effort on a career-high 34 carries in Minnesota's wild 37-34 home victory over the Green Bay Packers came with a much sweeter record?his team's 10-6 mark that ensured the NFC's wild-card No. 6 seed.

Peterson's 26-yard run with 24 seconds left put the Vikings in position for Blair Walsh's game-winning 29-yard field goal. Although there were still 11 more yards between the Vikings and the goal?more than enough to pass Eric Dickerson's total of 2,105?Peterson's remarkable season still had a storybook ending.

? NFL playoffs: Wild-card, divisional schedule | Early point spreads

Consider where Peterson was a year ago. On Christmas Eve 2011, against the Washington Redskins, he tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee, a grisly injury that would put the career of mere mortal backs in jeopardy. Two days later, he was put on injured reserve, the unofficial start of a long rehabilitation process that included recovery from reconstructive surgery he underwent last Dec. 30.

It's appropriate that Peterson became the seventh running back in NFL history to join the 2,000-yard rushing club (2,097 to be exact) exactly one year later. It's a testament to the relentless work ethic that got him back on the field and kept him at full strength all season long. It's just another reason why he's a special modern athlete who evokes the memories of legends past, including Jim Brown and Walter Payton.

Peterson accomplished what Brown and the late Payton never did during their illustrious time on the gridiron. Although Peterson didn't quite catch Dickerson, he trumped the best years of Barry Sanders and O.J. Simpson.

In an era where many teams have gone to backfields-by-committee and 20 touches are now considered big workloads, Peterson's hard-charging, reckless-abandon style is a refreshing respite. Even though the Packers?against whom he had rushed for 210 yards three weeks ago?knew he was going to get the ball often, they still had limited answers.

The Packers were so geared toward stopping him, it set up some of the easiest throws for Christian Ponder on a day the second-year quarterback needed to make them. One came on a 2-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter to Peterson, who also scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter that set the tone early in a must-win game.

The reward for Peterson leading a great team effort is a third matchup with the Packers, this time in Lambeau Field. Just like Sunday and back in Week 13 in Green Bay, the Vikings won't be shy about riding Peterson again. The Packers will go back to the drawing board looking for ways to stop what's coming.

Ever since Peterson made a splash as a dynamic rookie in a Vikings timeshare with Chester Taylor in 2007, it's been fun to watch Peterson run with no regard for his safety, or that of those trying to stop him. Whether it's been defenders or damaged ligaments, it's a joy to know that there's no obstacle he hasn't been able to hurdle.

? Week 17 roundup: Giants eliminated despite routing Eagles

Peterson has made a very strong case for MVP, and at worst should take home the awards for both Offensive Player of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year.

But even Peterson's near-record season may not be enough to stop the MVP momentum of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Thanks to the Houston Texans' loss at Indianapolis earlier in the day, Manning and Denver clinched the top seed and home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs with a 38-3 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs. That also opened the door for Tom Brady and New England to take the No. 2 seed and the second bye after beating the Miami Dolphins, 28-0.

What that means is the Broncos (13-3) and Patriots (12-4) are on a collision course for the AFC championship, rather than a divisional-round meeting. The Broncos' victory over the Chiefs was their 11th in a row overall. Their last loss came at New England, 31-21, on Oct. 7 in Week 5. Since then, the Broncos have improved every week, with Manning getting into a groove with all his receivers and the defense developing into a dominant unit. The Patriots have made more offensive mistakes than usual of late, and know now the rematch would be in Denver and not Foxborough.

John Elway and the Broncos brought in Manning with one goal in mind: the Super Bowl. It only makes sense that they'll likely need to go through Brady to attain it. In Denver, Manning has a more complete team around him than many of his Colts teams in Indianapolis. The Broncos are the deserved heavy favorite to win the AFC.

Same-sex couples marry in Maine for first time

PORTLAND, Maine (Reuters) - The first gay and lesbian couples to wed under Maine's new same-sex marriage law exchanged vows early on Saturday in a series of spare but joyous civil ceremonies held shortly after midnight.

"We finally feel equal and happy to be living in Maine," an exuberant Steven Bridges, 42, said shortly after he and his newly wedded husband, Michael Snell, 53, became the first couple at City Hall in Maine's largest town to tie the knot.

After the pair had filled out the necessary paperwork, the city records clerk, Christine Horne, performed the brief, no-frills ceremony, pronouncing the two men married as they exchanged rings and kissed. Snell's two adult daughters, both from a previous heterosexual marriage, looked on smiling.

Other couples waiting in the hallway outside the clerk's office cheered the pair as they emerged, and a much larger crowd of about 250 supporters huddled in front of the building let out a jubilant roar as Bridges, a retail manager, and Snell, a massage therapist, stepped out into the cold night air.

A group in the crowd sang the Beatles song "All You Need Is Love," accompanied by several musicians playing brass horns, and many carried signs with such slogans as "America's new day begins in Maine" and "Love one another."

Nearby, a man who identified himself only as a local preacher shouted Bible verses.

"I'm here to speak for the Lord and to warn they need to repent," the man said. "They should turn from their ways. Even though man passed a law, doesn't mean God does."

Similar nuptial scenes were repeated inside as five more couples exchanged vows during the next two hours, and more weddings were expected before the office was scheduled to close again at 3 a.m. Newlywed couples were offered cupcakes as they left the building.

About 15 couples simply obtained their marriage licenses, with plans to wed later.

"We've been together for 30 years and never thought that this country would allow marriages between gay couples," said Roberta Batt, 71, an antiques dealer and retired physician with silver hair and round eyeglasses, as she and her longtime partner, Mary, waited their turn to wed.

"We're just very thankful to the people of Maine, and I hope the rest of the country goes the way this state has," she added.

TURNING THE TIDE

Maine, Maryland and Washington state became the first three U.S. states to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples by popular vote with passage of ballot initiatives on November 6.

But Maine was the only one of the three where voters did so entirely on their own, without state legislators precipitating a referendum by acting first.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia now have statutes legalizing gay marriage. Washington's law took effect on December 9, and Maryland's law does so on January 1, 2013. Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments restricting marriage to heterosexual couples.

City clerks' offices around Maine scheduled extra weekend office hours, some opening late Friday night as in Portland to accommodate same-sex couples rushing to wed as the new law went into force at 12:01 a.m.

More lavish same-sex weddings were being booked for the spring at the On the Marsh Bistro in Kennebunk, said owner Denise Rubin.

"We support it wholeheartedly," she said. "We look forward to being part of a whole new wave of wonderful thinking."

The tide of public opinion has been shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. In May, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to declare his support for allowing gay couples to wed.

A Pew Research Center survey from October found 49 percent of Americans favored allowing gay marriage, with 40 percent opposed. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The nation's highest court said this month it will review a case against a federal law that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive. It also will look at a challenge to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, which voters narrowly approved in 2008.

Maine's voter-approved initiative this year marked a turnaround from 2009, when legislators passed a statute recognizing gay marriage only to see it overturned that same year in a statewide referendum.

Real Estate Expert William Bill Price Reveals Why Now is the Best ...

As someone who?s interested in investing in Frederick Maryland real estate, you?re likely someone who sees opportunity where others see a falling market. The reality is that a ?bad? means it?s the best time to invest. In this article, I?ll show you why now is the best time to invest in Frederick Maryland real estate.

Foreclosure sign

The old adage of any investment is to buy low and wait for it?s value to rise, then sell high. The real estate market is different from the stock market where when you buy a stock low you risk losing your money if the company sinks or doesn?t come back up. The reality is that real estate will always be in demand, because we?re not getting any more space and more and more people need places to live. Supply and demand dictates that over time, real estate must rise in prices.

Right now is one of the best times in history to buy because housing prices are at a historic low. Not only that, we have more foreclosers today than ever in history. As an investor, this is a huge opportunity for you.

People who can no longer afford their house still need a place to live. That means that the renter?s market is very active right now, because people are desperately looking for places to rent. In other words, housing prices are low and rent demand is high, plus the potential for your investments to go up is limitless. As an investor, what more could you hope for?

If it wasn?t clear already, the best strategy in this market is likely to be the ?buy and hold? strategy. There are very few investors who can make a living by flipping properties right now. One reason is that the market could fall faster than you?d make from your flip anyway. Another reason is that there simply isn?t a good buyer?s market for you to unload your properties.

These are just some of the reasons why now is the best time to invest in Frederick Maryland real estate. Remember that windows of opportunity don?t often stay open for very long. It?s important to act while you?ve got the chance.

UFC 155 fight card: Junior dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez 2 fight prediction, preview and breakdown

Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez will roll it back later tonight (Dec. 29, 2012) in the UFC 155 main event, little more than one year after their first encounter lasted little more than one minute in Nov. 2011. Will Velasquez keep his distance and exact revenge? Or will "Cigano" repeat history in "Sin City?" Jason Probst for MMAmania.com breaks it all down.

With the first title defense under his belt, Junior Dos Santos looked every bit the world beater in dispatching Frank Mir as he did in taking the heavyweight title against Cain Velasquez.

Using potent striking and laser-like accuracy, Dos Santos' mixed martial arts (MMA) game is seemingly at its apex. Facing a revenge-minded Velasquez, who dismantled Antonio Silva in his last outing, Dos Santos may well have his hands full in the UFC 155 main event this evening (Dec. 29, 2012) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That's because "Brown Pride" is the most dangerous kind of opponent: a guy he beat far more convincingly than their relative skill sets would suggest who is bent on payback.

Check out a complete breakdown of the UFC 155 main event rematch between Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez below:

The Breakdown

In nine fights, dos Santos has yet to be planted on his back. His ability to dictate range and terms of engagement -- along with an incredibly spry physique for a man his size -- are a nasty assignment that are reminiscent of a prime Fedor Emelianenko. And his penchant for explosive, fight-changing punches in the blink of an eye are yet another cause of concern for opponents. One mistake and it's over.

Velasquez, however, figures to have better stamina in a long, gut-check type of fight, if he can force one.

Dos Santos started fast in blowout decision wins over Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson, pretty much coasting over the final two rounds once it was clear his opponents couldn't challenge him on the feet, much less convert anything into a takedown. Grappling cardio, however, figures to favor Velasquez if he's in top position.

Given the disaster that their first encounter was for the former champ, you have to wonder how he'll hold up if drilled repeatedly and if scoring a takedown means attempting desperate, low-percentage shots.

If there's a real X-factor in this fight, it's dos Santos' guard. He's won several grappling competitions in Brazil, and I think his takedowns are an overlooked weapon in his arsenal because he never seems to need them. But his top-notch training partners (the Nogueira brothers and Anderson Silva, among others) figure to have helped him develop as much of a guard as he or anyone else will need in the Heavyweight division.

Velasquez has to stay away from dos Santos' massive right hand, which means circling to his right to take away some of its power, yet he still has to strike enough to buy respect. Much as Randy Couture did in his first fight with Chuck Liddell, there's a blueprint for Velasquez: use disruptive jabs and good timing to upset the striker's rhythm, then close the gap to force cardio-sapping clinches and grappling.

Even if Velasquez can't make a takedown attempt stick, it's still enough to make dos Santos use stamina, wearing him down for the second half of the fight.

If Velasquez does get it to the ground, he should be content to stay in guard and hammer away. Dos Santos has the best hips of any heavyweight I've seen since Emelianenko, and even a half-guard position could give him enough room to squirm and scramble out. Dos Santos is also excellent when pressed against the cage, manipulating the other guy's weight and head to slip off the fence. Velasquez, meanwhile, if he can force clinches there, should be sure to get a solid body lock to keep "Cigano" from wrestling free because he's not going to win this fight in the middle of the cage.

He's got to make it a down-and-dirty gut check, while avoiding huge damage early.

The Pick

On paper, these two could make for one of the great rivalries of the sport. But, there's a big problem for Velasquez, and it's getting to the point where he can apply his advantages appropriately, which is pretty much a problem for anyone not named Alistair Overeem in the present state of the heavyweight division.

Dos Santos has many skills that he barely uses such as good kicks, takedowns and grappling, because they're overshadowed by his numbing striking, which dominates fights.

Look for Velasquez to open the fight cautious and circling, hoping to scout dos Santos a bit before opening up, which was his fatal mistake last time. However, it's hard to see where Velasquez doesn't get caught again, as he is wont to do, especially when trying to close the gap.

It would be a revealing moment for dos Santos as champion to have to deal with the thundering guns of Velasquez's ground and pound. And I wouldn't be surprised to see that happen for a moment or two. But, dos Santos' athleticism and toughness should be enough to carry him through any time he spends on his back. And on the feet, he'll just have too many chances to exploit Velasquez' standing deficits, as he rocks him several times in the first and second round, prior to pouncing in the third round for a finishing salvo en route to a knockout win.

Dos Santos via knockout

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the UFC 155 main card action later this evening (Sat., Dec. 29, 2012), which is slated to begin at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV). The latest quick updates of the live action will begin to flow earlier than that around 6:30 p.m. ET with the "Prelims" bouts on Facebook and FX Channel.

Paul Krugman: Here's The Dirty Secret About Economic Growth

The New York Times:

The great bulk of the economic commentary you read in the papers is focused on the short run: the effects of the "fiscal cliff" on U.S. recovery, the stresses on the euro, Japan's latest attempt to break out of deflation. This focus is understandable, since one global depression can ruin your whole day. But our current travails will eventually end. What do we know about the prospects for long-run prosperity?

No tall order: Chicago cops seek 7-foot robber

Victims of a number of recent heists on the Chicago Transit Authority's Pink Line say one of their robbers is so tall his head almost touched the top of the train.

In the eight days between Dec. 10 and Dec. 18, there were four robberies, police said.

Each time, two men would grab someone's phone just as the train approached a station, jump out as the doors close and run away.

The men were described as being between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. One of them was about six feet tall. The other man, witnesses said, was more than seven feet tall.

Stocks retreat on worries about spending, 'cliff'

6 hrs.

Stocks erased their early gains to turn lower Wednesday, dragged by the consumer discretionary sector, as ongoing worries over the looming "fiscal cliff" overshadowed a better-than-expected Case-Shiller home price index.?

"There's just no certainty and people don't know where to step," said Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners. "We're kind of in a quandary here?the market didn't catch at 1,422 like it was supposed to and the next catch point is 1,415 on the S&P. There's not a lot of volume and you have a lot of traders with question marks on their heads right now."?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped into negative territory for the third-straight session, led by Microsoft and UnitedHealth.?

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also erased their gains to turn lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, gained near 19.

Most key S&P sectors turned lower, led by consumer discretionary and consumer staples, while materials held modest gains.?

Obama will return to Washington early on Thursday, according to the White House, to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1.

"I don't think the President is coming back from Hawaii without anticipating we're getting something done so I'm optimistic and the street is somewhat optimistic too," said Gordon Charlop of Rosenblatt Securities. "You don't get a sense that they're selling into the pessimism that people are trying to circulate about the fiscal cliff not being resolved." (Read More: Over the Fiscal Cliff: What Kind of Landing?)

"[But] we'll be looking at muted volume," Charlop added. "It's going to be a wait-and-see session."?

Wall Street has been increasingly worried that the two sides may not reach a deal in time. Art Cashin, director of floor operations for UBS, said such an outcome would result in a 95 percent chance of a U.S. recession next year.

The worries over the fiscal cliff and an extremely weak report on the holiday shopping season put major retail stocks including Macy's, Wal-Mart and Target under pressure.?

Sales in the two months before Christmas rose just 0.7 compared to last year, the slowest rate of growth since 2008, according to the MasterCard Advisors Spending Pulse. Analysts had been expecting growth of 3 to 4 percent.

Amazon.com and Netflix were both slightly lower after an outage at an Amazon web service center impacted Netflix subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America on Christmas eve. Service was fully restored by Christmas day.?

Meanwhile, Apple weighed on the tech sector and the Nasdaq 100 index, slipping nearly 1 percent.?

Herbalife rallied, looking to snap a nine-day losing streak, after the nutrition and skin-care products company retained a legal firm to help defend itself against attacks by hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, according to the Wall Street Journal. Last week, Ackman shorted the Herbalife's stock and accused the company of operating a pyramid scheme.?

On the economic front, the S&P/Case Shiller home price index of 20 major cities rose 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping expectations for a gain of 0.5 percent. And prices in the 20 cities jumped 4.3 percent from last year, beating forecasts for an increase of 4.0 percent.?

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond said manufacturers in the central Atlantic region posted modest activity in December, but at a slower pace than in November.?

Stocks in Europe were closed for the Boxing Day holiday. In Asia, markets closed higher on thin volumes, with Japanese stocks rallying to hit nine-month highs on a weaker yen.

  • THURSDAY: Jobless claims, new home sales, consumer confidence
  • FRIDAY: Pending home sales

(AP) ? When election-time rolls around, this impoverished province of farmlands south of Cairo has proven one of the most die-hard bastions of support for Islamists in Egypt, producing lopsided victories for the Muslim Brotherhood and its ultraconservative allies.

Last weekend's referendum that approved Egypt's Islamist-backed constitution was no exception. According to final results released Tuesday, nearly 90 percent of voters in Fayoum backed the charter, the second highest margin among the country's 27 provinces, mirroring the levels Islamists received here in other votes since the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

But even here, dissident voices creep in. Poverty-stricken farmers, disgruntled youth and even some of the most conservative Islamists show frustration with the Brotherhood less than six months since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi came to power.

The opposition is hoping to build on such discontent as it aims for a stronger showing in upcoming parliamentary elections.

The Brotherhood "burned their bridges quickly," said Ramadan Khairallah, a teacher in the village of Mandara who voted for Morsi in the summer but voted "no" in the referendum.

He said the Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails and which is his core political backer, used to distribute cooking gas among Fayoum residents, but that isn't enough anymore to ensure people's support. Among some resentment has grown over what they see as the Brotherhood's bullying way in power or the lack of change since Morsi was inaugurated in June as Egypt's first freely elected president.

"They want to monopolize power and take everything for themselves. But people don't accept them like before," he said.

The referendum results show the strength of the Brotherhood and other Islamists ? and their limits. The constitution passed by some 64 percent nationwide. But turnout was a meager 33 percent. Islamists were unable to expand their base, rallying fewer voters than in last summer's presidential vote. In Fayoum, a province with 1.6 million voters, around 485,000 people voted "yes" on the constitution, down from the 590,000 who voted for Morsi.

If Islamists could only bring out their base, the opposition proved even less able to rouse the discontented ? or those confused or apathetic about the charter ? to a "no" vote, showing how far it has to go to connect with the public ahead of parliament elections expected within several months. Since Mubarak's ouster, liberal and secular politicians have made little headway in building grassroots support or organizations anywhere close to the Brotherhood's election machine.

In the Fayoum village of Senarow, farmer Mohsen Moufreh echoed often-heard reasons why so many back the Brotherhood.

"I trust them," he said on voting day. "They are good people, they believe in God's justice ... Their charity distributes meat during holidays and if my kid gets sick, they are the ones who help."

The 42-year-old, who has five children and makes the equivalent of about $4 a day, said he didn't read the constitution but voted for it because he trusts the Brotherhood when they say it is the way to stability and a better life.

Fayoum, a fertile oasis just off the Nile River, was once a breeding ground for radical Islamic jihadists who battled Mubarak's rule during 1990s. Since then it has been an active center for the Brotherhood, the ultraconservative Salafis and for former militants who foreswore violence and created political parties after Mubarak's fall. It has also one of Egypt's poorest provinces. People have been falling into poverty here faster than almost anywhere in the country, with the percentage of people earning less than $1 a day rising to 41 percent from 29 percent in 2009, according to government statistics released last month.

During voting Saturday, the Islamists' organizing was on display.

Cars with loudspeakers toured villages, calling on people to vote "yes." Banners with pictures of Egypt's most influential ultraconservative clerics proclaimed, "They say yes to the constitution" and "Islam is the solution." Women cloaked in black with veils that left only their eyes showing were brought in groups from their homes in pick-up trucks to polling stations. There, teams of men with the beards of conservative Muslims passed out cards with blue circles, to ensure illiterate voters knew which circle to check on the ballot ? blue for "yes," brown for "no."

Still, voices of discontent were heard. Some are bitter over an enduring economic crisis that hits farmers hard. Others became more critical watching the debates in Cairo that came to their villages though the numerous liberal-minded TV talk shows. Some religious conservatives said they have grown to see the Brotherhood as acting more out of hunger for power than "for the sake of God."

The tempers were high, with Brotherhood members angrily accusing opponents of being "feloul" ? remnants of Mubarak's regime ? or of having their minds poisoned by liberal media.

Outside a polling station in the village of Sheikh Fadl, one resident complained about Islamists to an Associated Press journalist.

"Look no one in this village read the constitution ... I can read and write, but I don't understand the constitution and I couldn't decide whether to say or no," Said Abdel-Moneim, a driver, said.

"But here the Brotherhood knocks doors and brings people out," he said, "and if someone says no, he gets beaten up."

A Brotherhood member who overheard him protested ? and the two quickly fell into a fistfight, kicking each other and throwing punches.

An old man in white robe and scarf around his head yelled, "All this is the account of the people the simple people. The farmer is ignored."

"The prices are high for fertilizers. The (land) costs tripled and revenues dropped," he shouted, saying he was furious at the Brotherhood ? but also adding a criticism of the opposition. "The educated and the elite are doing nothing but protests ... people here are tired and sick."

Islam Abdullah, a young voter, complained people follow whatever choice well-known clerics bless.

"People here believe the religious scholars. Most of the people didn't know what to say until Mohammed Hassan came out and said yes. It was over," he said, referring to a prominent Salafi cleric.

He was interrupted by a passing Brotherhood member. "This is not true. Don't talk about things you don't know," he yelled ? and another fistfight broke out.

"Everyone who said no is a feloul," said another Brotherhood member near the polls, Sayed Zedan.

In nearby Mandara, a man with the long beard of an ultraconservative complained about the Brotherhood as he watched voters arriving in minibuses.

"We have tried the Muslim Brotherhood in every possible way and they never lived up to their promise," said Mohammed Ali, a history teacher who belongs to the political party of the Gamaa Islamiya, once a violent extremist group.

"They know how to strike the right tone. They tell people that Christians don't want the constitution because they are against Shariah and that Muslims must defend it," he said. "People tend to believe those in power."

PFT: Seahawks enjoy getting revenge on Harbaugh

Tim TebowAP

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has acknowledged that he was upset when he learned last week that he had been bypassed on the depth chart by Greg McElroy. Now Tebow says his goal now is to become a good quarterback ? somewhere ? in 2013.

Tebow told ESPN?s Adam Schefter he is ?more determined than ever to dedicate my entire off-season to becoming the best quarterback I can be next season.?

Regarding the ESPNNewYork.com report that Tebow told Jets coach Rex Ryan he didn?t want to play in the Wildcat after he was informed that McElroy would start in place of the benched Mark Sanchez, Tebow admitted that he was upset, and he expressed his displeasure to Ryan. Schefter?s report does not specify, however, whether Tebow flat-out refused to play in the Wildcat when he found out on Tuesday that McElroy was starting, or whether Tebow merely said he was unhappy that he wasn?t getting the opportunity to start.

Whatever transpired between Tebow and Ryan, Tebow did tell Schefter that on Friday he told Ryan that he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. By that time, the Jets had been planning to use receiver Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat role, and that?s what they did in Sunday?s game against the Chargers.

The fact that Tebow even had to express to Ryan that he was willing to do anything to help the team win is telling. If a player is conducting himself the right way, it should go without saying that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to help his team win. If the Jets? coaches needed to be reassured that Tebow was willing to do whatever he had to do to help the team win, that strongly suggests that Tebow isn?t quite the humble, hard-working player that he tries to portray himself as. The job of a football player is to play football the way his coaches tell him to play. It doesn?t matter if Tebow thinks he deserves to start ahead of McElroy. The Jets? coaches decided that McElroy was the starter for Sunday?s game, and Tebow?s job was to support the team in whatever role the coaches told him to play.

If Tebow ever expressed anything other than a firm commitment to doing whatever the coaches asked him to do, then he?s no better than Santonio Holmes, who was widely ripped last year for being a destructive force in the Jets? locker room. Holmes was pilloried all offseason for the way he acted at the end of the Jets? season in 2011. If Tebow is acting the same way at the end of the Jets? season in 2012, he deserves the same scorn.

As for Tebow?s ambitions of being a starter next year, well, good luck with that. There is exactly one NFL team that might be willing to give Tebow a shot, and that team ? Jacksonville ? would be willing to give him a shot for business reasons, not for football reasons. Tebow is desired in Jacksonville because he?s viewed as a good guy, not a good football player. And the news of the last 24 hours suggests that he?s actually not that good a guy.

Your History: 2012 in Review Part 1 - Inside Gaming Daily Blog

The year 2012 was transformative for the video game industry. It began with more than one uncomfortable glimpse into the industry?s dark side, exposing the prices paid to keep business running. And a surefire hit franchise stumbled, leading its fans to lose faith, and its creators to lose face. As the year progressed, however, it seemed as though the status quo was shifting. Amid the deeply entrenched system of big budget studios and publishers, suddenly smaller projects were capturing the hearts and minds of gamers. And instead of simply garnering attention, these projects were actually getting funding. But will these new paradigms kick start a new age of video gaming? Or will the big boys come back in 2013 with a vengeance?

Double Trouble

Shortly after the start of the New Year, shocking news rocked the video game world, and the tech industry as a whole. In early January, three-hundred workers in China had gathered on the roof of their factory and threatened mass suicide to protest unfair working conditions. The factory was making Xbox 360 consoles, and was owned by Foxconn, the Chinese corporation whose plants manufacture electronics for Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Apple, and more. Though the incident ended peacefully, the effect on the industry was bracing.

The protests were something of a wake-up call for many companies, spurring probes into the way Foxconn ran its factories. Three months later, an investigation by Apple revealed a number of labor law violations being perpetrated at Foxconn-owned facilities. Despite these revelations, most tech companies continued to contract with Foxconn for manufacturing duties, though it?s said reforms are being put in place.

But while the harsh realities of the industry?s manufacturing practices were exposed for the world to see, dark clouds continued to gather over the business?s corporate side. THQ, a publisher whose financial difficulties the year before forced it to cancel franchises and close several studios, announced in late-January that it would begin a ?strategic realignment? to focus on ?core game franchises.? The result? Two-hundred-and-forty employees being laid off, CEO Brian Farrell taking a 50 percent pay cut, and even more studio closures.

A few days after THQ?s announcement, the company received an official warning that it was in danger of being delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange, a result of their stock?s value having dipped below a dollar to 70 cents a share. Aside from the rough economy and lower-than-expected sales, THQ pointed the finger at its uDraw Tablet peripheral, a stylus-enabled controller that was a hit on the family-friendly Wii in 2010?and an utter flop for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. The company claimed the uDraw was to blame for its disastrous loss of $56 million in the third quarter.

While THQ?s troubles were the most visible, early 2012 brought plenty of doom and gloom elsewhere as layoffs abounded. id Software, Sega, Starbreeze, and Obsidian Entertainment had all laid off staff in the first three months of 2012, a result of the sluggish economy. All in all, it was a difficult time to work in the video game business.

So what about the consumer side of the industry? In February, Sony released their brand new portable console, the PlayStation Vita, in North America. Since Nintendo?s 3DS handheld had seen a rocky launch the year before, some analysts predicted a similar uphill battle for Sony?a belief reinforced by the console?s slow adoption after its Japanese launch in December 2011. Each week after its Japanese release, the Vita?s sales dropped lower and lower, being surpassed for numerous weeks by its predecessor, the PSP. Unfortunately for Sony, the slow Japanese launch was as a sign of what was to come in North America. Despite excellent reviews, the console failed to catch on, and still struggles to find its place in the marketplace.

But the market wasn?t all doom and gloom. A brand-new IP published by Electronic Arts in February managed to find a solid audience, no mean feat in a marketplace so dependent on sequels and brand recognition. The game?s stylized fantasy world was conceived and designed by legendary author R.A. Salvatore and comic book veteran Todd McFarlane, and developed at Maryland-based Big Huge Games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, was launched to solid critical reception and sales approaching half a million. The game?s release was more than just a victory for a new IP?it was a success for Big Huge Games? parent company, Rhode Island-based 38 Studios, which had rescued Big Huge from its former owner?THQ?which planned to shut it down. Based on the strength of Amalur?s performance, it looked as though the industry had a new force to be reckoned with, and a sequel seemed inevitable.

On the subject of sequels, EA had yet another big game to publish shortly after Amalur: Mass Effect 3, the epic conclusion to BioWare?s space-faring RPG. Released in March, Mass Effect 3 earned extremely high praise from nearly every critic, and debuted to huge sales. During its first month on shelves, it sold 1.3 million physical units for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, a figure that didn?t take the game?s digital sales into account. Mass Effect 3 seemed to be another hit.

But sales and reviews weren?t the whole story. When gamers completed the single-player campaign, many were shocked to discover an ending that failed to live up to their expectations. Despite a series that managed to carry each gamer?s decisions and stories from one installment to the next, the ending seemed not to take any of what had gone before into consideration. What should?ve been the trilogy?s final triumphant crescendo instead rang hollow in gamers? ears. The legions of fans Mass Effect had built up over the years were not happy.

Gamers started online petitions to convince EA and BioWare to change the ending, with one fan going so far as to send BioWare $1,000 worth of cupcakes to sweeten them into a new finale. Another fan reported EA to the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau, claiming the publisher had failed to live up to its claims for the game. The rage continued into April, with Electronic Arts being named by the Consumerist as ?Worst Company in America for 2012.? A week later, the Better Business Bureau agreed with the angry fan?s allegations that EA had misled its customers about Mass Effect 3. Another group, calling itself ?Retake Mass Effect,? raised $80,000 for charity in to try and prove that fans were serious about wanting a new ending.

For their part, EA and BioWare announced they would release an ?extended cut? of the game?s ending as downloadable content later that summer. Whether or not the DLC was always planned for release, or if it was devised as a way to mollify angry fans, was never clear. Either way, the announcement seemed to provide some relief and the furor began to subside.

While fans demanded change in one sector of the industry, they were effecting it in another, sowing the seeds for what may become a revolution in the way business is done. In early February, Tim Schaffer?s Double Fine Productions launched a Kickstarter project that sought funding for a new adventure game. Its goals were modest: raise $400,000 to make the game and film a documentary about its creation.

Within a mere eight hours of launching, the project met its goal. A Kickstarter spokesperson confirmed that the project set a record for time taken to meet its goal, and had ?more backers than any other project on the site.? Before the day had ended, the project broke the $1 million barrier. And Double Fine?s runaway success didn?t end there. Once its thirty days were up in mid-March, Double Fine Adventure had earned $3.3 million in pledged funding, more than 800 percent of its originally sought amount.

Double Fine hadn?t just kick started their new project, but a potential revolution in how games found consumers. Suddenly the industry sat up and took notice of a new way to fund games. Critics began to raise questions about the role of publishers. Many developers had always regarded them as a necessary evil to bring projects to market. The Mass Effect 3 debacle seemed to prove to fans that publishers were still evil?but if Double Fine could raise so much cash, were publishers actually necessary?

For many independent or small-scale developers, the answer was still ?yes??not every studio enjoyed the fan-clout of Double Fine. After five years of arduous development, indie studio Polytron finally finished its long-awaited debut game: FEZ. Its publisher, Microsoft Studios, scheduled the game to hit XBLA in April, a full two years after it was first supposed to launch. But it was worth the wait: after one month on the market, FEZ earned over 100,000 in digital sales and received high praise from critics who?d eagerly awaited its release.

April also saw the release of another unconventional game on digital platforms. Telltale Games had long flown under the radar, releasing critically acclaimed point-and-click style games based on quirky licenses like Back to the Future, Sam & Max, and Homestar Runner. In February, Telltale announced a licensing deal with comic book writer Robert Kirkman to make episodic games based on his successful series, The Walking Dead. The property had already been adapted into a hit show on AMC, and interest in the game was high, even if expectations for another point-and-click from Telltale might have been modest. After all, how could the terror of a zombie apocalypse translate to the format?s slow style?

As it turned out, it translated better than anyone could?ve imagined. Upon its late-April release, the first episode of The Walking Dead earned rave reviews, and sold over a million digital copies in only two weeks.

An adventure game raising over $3 million directly from fans? A point-and-click game tearing up the charts? Mass Effect and BioWare?making fans angry? The first four months of 2012 had defied expectations, and no one could predict what the next few months would bring. And in May, one of the industry?s newest stars would fall, making national headlines and leaving onlookers stunned?

Tune in next time for the true Reckoning?
