Tel Aviv University develops treatment for deadly coral bacteria based on human medication

Corals are an invaluable part of the marine ecosystem, fostering biodiversity and protecting coastlines. But they're also increasingly endangered. Pathogenic bacteria, along with pollution and harmful fishing practices, are one of the biggest threats to the world's coral populations today.

One of the solutions to the crisis may lie in human medicine. Prof. Eugene Rosenberg of Tel Aviv University's Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, working in collaboration with Dr. Ilil Atad of his own laboratory and Prof. Yossi Loya of TAU's Department of Zoology, has developed a treatment for coral infected by Thalassomonas loyana, otherwise known as White Plague disease. This deadly bacterium infects 9 percent of Favia favus corals on the Eilat coral reef in the Red Sea and readily transmits the disease to nearby healthy corals.

Their treatment uses viruses that infect bacteria by injecting genetic material into the bacteria, a therapy originally developed to treat bacterial infections in humans. In this case, the researchers isolated a virus called BA3, one of a category of viruses known as phages. After laboratory experiments showed that BA3 had the ability to kill off White Plague disease, field experiments in the Gulf of Eilat demonstrated that the treatment stopped the progression of the disease in infected corals and prevented the spread of the disease to surrounding healthy corals as well.

These findings were presented at the American Society for Microbiology's general meeting in June.

From human to marine medicine

Treating bacterial infections in corals is no easy task. Because corals don't produce antibodies like humans, they can't be immunized. And pharmaceutical antibiotics are not a viable option because the treatment releases the drugs into the sea, harming the marine environment.

The researchers applied their treatment to two groups of diseased coral, each surrounded by a circle of healthy corals. In the test group, the researchers injected the virus into the area at a concentration of 1000 per milliliter. The control group did not receive the virus.

After 24 hours, the difference in the outcome was highly significant, says Prof. Rosenberg. In the test group, the infection of the diseased coral ceased its progression, and the disease did not spread to the surrounding healthy corals. In the control group, however, the White Plague disease progressed rapidly in the original infected coral and spread to seven out of ten of the surrounding healthy corals.

Amplifying a natural process

One of the most surprising discoveries during the course of their research, says Prof. Rosenberg, was that some corals naturally posses the beneficial virus and are already resistant to infection by the pathogen. When the researchers tested the three corals in the control group that remained uninfected, they discovered that the virus was already present in their biological composition. "We found that this is a natural process that goes on all the time. What we are doing is only shifting the situation in favor of the virus," he explains.

This method of developing an antidote to specific pathogenic coral bacteria is a crucial breakthrough, Prof. Rosenberg says. Corals in different regions of the world are infected with different pathogens. For each location, it is necessary to isolate the appropriate virus. But microbiologists should be able to develop regionalized treatments based on the methods used by Prof. Rosenberg and his fellow researchers.

The next step is to develop an effective way to spread the viruses over large areas of an infected coral reef. Sufficient amounts of these viruses can be easily manufactured in the laboratory. After that, it's a question of technology and funding, Prof. Rosenberg adds.

?The expo aims to show them at an early age that they can have that career here in Colac,? Michael said.

?By telling them when they are in year nine and 10 they can make decisions to help their career ? subjects they need to take and how to get there and know a local business offers that,? he said.

?We can completely understand if they need tertiary qualifications they might need to go to Melbourne but it would be great to get them back in Colac earlier and becoming leaders of the community.?

Michael said Colac district students, education and training providers and businesses at last year?s careers expo gave ?extremely positive? feedback.

?We asked a range of questions and 63 percent of students said after attending the 2011 expo they were now thinking about a career not previously considered.

?As a result of attending there were 96 per cent of students who said they knew more about career opportunities in Colac,? Michael said.

?There was also a great response from exhibitors at last year?s expo with a 100-per-cent response rate from people who wanted to attend this year?s event.?

Michael said careers teachers could see huge benefits from the expo because it enhanced the career-focused support they provided at school.

?There is only so much schools can do with guiding students on their career path but the expo offers direct contact between students and a broad variety of businesses,? he said.

The career expo passports will return this year with the support of students and exhibitors.

?The exhibitors really like the passports because the activities encouraged the students to get involved; they make the expo more interactive rather than relying on the year nine and 10 students to approach businesses and ask questions,? Michael said.

?The passport activities for each stand relate to that industry and students enjoyed them at last year?s expo.?

Friday?s event will be the second expo hosted by Colac Otway Shire Council and sponsored by the Colac Herald.

About 550 students from Colac Secondary College, Colac?s Trinity College, Lavers Hill K-12 College, Apollo Bay Secondary College and Lorne-Aireys Inlet P-12 College will attend the event.

Australia announced Tuesday it will link its hard-fought carbon pricing scheme, aimed at combating climate change, with the European Union's from mid-2015.

The minister said a previous commitment to set a floor price of Aus$15 per tonne for the first three years to avoid price shocks would be scrapped.

"We now look forward to the first full inter-continental linking of emission trading systems," European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, said in a joint statement with Combet.

Combet said he was confident of Australian government modelling, which predicts a Aus$29 a tonne carbon price in 2015-16. The current EU price is below Aus$10.

The issue of a carbon tax has been hotly debated in Australia, among the world's worst per capita polluters due to its reliance on coal-fired power and mining exports.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard's popularity has sunk since she announced plans for the carbon tax in early 2011 -- after pledging before her 2010 election that it would not be introduced by a government she led.

Also, wraps are a good way to sneak in veggies they might not otherwise eat, plus other nutritional add-ins such as tahini and nutritional yeast. ?Use whole-grain tortillas, nori, or ? if your kids are green leafy stars ? wrap fillings in kale or collard leaves.

Bean Dips ? and yes, Hummus! Typically I make triple (or quadruple) batches of hummus, and freeze one or more containers. Hummus?(more recipes in my books too)?thaws brilliantly ? just takes a little time ? so give this time-saver tip a try. ?Not just for dipping with pitas and ?veggies, hummus can also be used in sandwiches as a spread, in wraps, as a layer on pizzas to hold veggies, or even mixed with grains such as rice or into pasta. Hummus is truly a lunch lifesaver. Make it your friend (and make it yourself; it?s much cheaper and far tastier).

?PB&J?. ?I doubt any schools still allow peanut butter. But some allow nuts, and if not, seeds are usually permitted. So, try different nut and seed butters in sandwiches. ?Since seed butters can be bitter, try adding ground cinnamon to make them naturally sweeter, and a splash of pure maple syrup. dAlso, look into organic soy nut butter spreads? there are even varieties that contain cocoa, for a special treat. Use with whole-grain breads, crisp breads, pitas, tortillas, etc.

Soups and Stews: Soups make a hearty, satisfying lunch for your kids. If you didn?t get to batch-cooking on the weekend, there are some wholesome store-bought alternatives that are also timesavers. I often like to add some cooked beans or whole grains to these soups, to boost the nutritional value. ?I have many hearty soups in my books. ?Some kiddo faves are One While Chick Soup and Mellow Sniffle Lentil Soup from?Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan, and Tomato Lentil Soup with Cumin and Fresh Dill?(doesn?t sound kid-friendly, but is!) and ?Kids? Cheesy Chickpea and White Beans Soup? in Let Them Eat Vegan?(and more examples to follow).

Sauce It Up!: ?Kids love to dip and dunk, so send small containers with lids filled with some of their fave sauces, like tahini or other seed/nut-based sauce, tomato sauce, ?KD Dip?, or a homemade sauce/salad dressing, or maybe a container with nutritional yeast for sprinkling! ?Our girls love nutritional yeast mixed with tahini sauce? whatever works, right? ?And, our girls do not really love pasta (tomato) sauce. ?But, if I add in a splash of balsamic vinegar, they enjoy it much more! ?All these sauces can also be used to mix into whole grains or pasta, along with veggies/seeds/beans/tofu, etc. As I often say ?a sauce makes a meal?!

Grain Bowls: Much like how most vegan restaurants have a ?Buddha Bowl?, you can make something similar for lunches. ?This is where batch-cooking comes in handy. ?Cook more grains than you need for a given meal, so you have extra stored in the fridge during the week. Start with a whole grain/pseudo-grain ? quinoa, millet, brown rice, wild rice, etc ? and add in fave veggies (I use frozen peas a lot ? simply thaw in a bowl of boiled water, then drain and toss in) ? or even fruits like chopped grapes or berries, along with any other nutrient-dense add-ins like hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, beans, tempeh cubes, etc. ?Here is where you can add some of those zippy sauces! ?Pack in a sealed container with a fork/spoon ? read to go!

Pasta Bowls: Much of what you can do with a grain bowl works equally well for leftover pasta. ?I always cook extra pasta (either whole-wheat, kamut, or brown rice), and store in a container in the fridge. ?When making lunches, the pasta will be a little tough/chewy after refrigerating (especially brown rice pasta). ?Simply place in a big bowl, cover with boiled water, then drain after a minute. ?It will soften the pasta again, and also make it more amenable to coating with sauces/seasonings. ?If find the cut shapes (rotini, penne, etc) work best for lunches, easier and neater for little ones to eat than long noodles like spaghetti.

Veggies: ?If you kiddo is really picky about veggies, try grating them fine ? very fine? or mincing in a mini-food processor until almost a pulp, and mixing INTO dips, spreads, nut butters, tofu or chickpea sandwich mashes, or into those grain bowls, pasta dishes, wraps, and more. Yeah, they might notice them ? but they will be too tiny to pick out, and if they like the overall flavor of the dish, they will eat it. ?And, if added to a pasta with other items they love (dried fruit, tamari roasted chickpeas, tofu cubes), they will more likely accept!

Breakfast Foods: Some children love to have some breakfast foods like pancakes, french toast, tofu scrambles, or ?momelets? in their lunchboxes. ?If you prepare a batch or two on the weekend, it can carry you over two or more lunches during the week. ?Momelet?photo by Ricki Heller ? Savory sandwiches. If you have leftover grilled or baked tofu, pulse it through a mini-food processor and then mix in chopped veggies and condiments and use as a sandwich filling. Or simply use slices in sandwiches, with a tahini spread, hummus, or other condiment to hold the tofu in place. Chickpeas can be mashed or pureed and again mixed with veggies and condiments for a hearty sandwich filling, and one that looks not much different from the egg or tuna sandwiches other kids might be eating. Grilled cheese sandwiches are a favorite, and you can use any vegan cheese you prefer, or a nut or seed cheese in place of a commercial vegan cheese. Let cool before packing, and include a small container of ketchup for dipping. If your child is a true veggie lover, make simple sandwiches with chopped, sliced, or grated fresh veggies. ?Use whole grain/sprouted breads, or whole-grain pitas or bagels.

Fruit: Fresh fruit is an obvious choice, especially easy-to-eat fruit such as grapes, strawberries, and orange segments. But others such as cubed melon, plums, kiwi wedges (the kids can eat them like an orange), and half a mango (scored) are welcome changes. Also try replacing raisins with other dried fruit such as apple slices, mango, or apricots. Choose unsulfured and organic whenever possible.

Baked Goods: I am always doing double batches of some variety of muffin, mini-muffin, healthy cookie, snack bar, etc. ?I give many examples at the end of this post of recipes from my books. Coconut Banana Muffins (becoming very popular! See photo at top of post) from Let Them Eat Vegan.

Store-bought items. Lunches and snacks are made even easier with a few prepared items: healthier granola bars, dairy-free yogurts, whole organic fruit bars, unsweetened applesauce cups, crackers, and other more natural snacks. ?And, while foods like Daiya cheese, cheese spreads, and veggie dogs are more processed, there is nothing wrong with incorporating them occasionally, especially on those joyous ?hot lunch? days! I particularly like the Wayfare brand of cheese spread. ?It is oat-based, the ingredients are not from some science experiment, and it works really well for a sandwich/wrap spread to ?hold? other ingredients when you are plum out of hummus! ?(hmmm, plum hummus? plummus?) ?I?ll stop.

Nibbly Bites: ?Kids love finger foods, so things like beans (for our kids, that means Tamari Roasted Chickpeas, Cinnamon Tortilla Strips, Softly Spiced Nuts (if nuts permitted, or you could sub seeds and dried fruit in this recipe), small bites of tofu, tempeh strips?(I simply bake these in the toaster oven on a parchment-lined tray until lightly browned), or seitan, sheets of nori, seaweed snacks, raw crackers, or whole-grain/raw cereals.?Kaia has a line of raw snacks, and some may be just right for your lunchboxes, like ?salt and vinegar pumpkin seeds?!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As tropical storm Isaac bears down on the Gulf Coast, there should be plenty of money ? some $1.5 billion ? in federal disaster aid coffers, thanks, in part, to a new system that budgets help for victims of hurricanes, tornadoes and floods before they occur.

It's a system that Paul Ryan, the Republican nominee-to-be for vice president, had hoped to scrap as a way to make his House GOP budget look smaller by about $10 billion a year. Politely, party elders told him no way, at least for now.

The Obama administration was the driving force behind the new disaster funding scheme and made it part of last summer's hard-fought budget pact, even though President Barack Obama himself had given short shrift to budgeting for disasters prior to a spate of them early last year, including tornadoes that ripped through Missouri and Alabama.

Congresses and administrations, after all, always had been fairly forthcoming with whatever disaster aid was needed after the fact.

The new system means disaster aid will not have to compete with other programs for financing, nor have to rely on less certain ad hoc funding at the height of a crisis.

Instead, disaster money was added on top of the official budget "cap" in line with the amounts budgeted in prior years.

It had been a different story earlier in the year as the government's chief disaster fund almost ran dry, thanks to foot-dragging by the White House and demands by tea party House Republicans that disaster aid be partly "paid for" with cuts to programs that Obama favored. The administration instead let the political pressure build as disaster accounts dwindled, sparking the ire of both his GOP rivals and allies like Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., but turning the tables in its favor.

Months after agreeing to the new regime, Republican leaders still had to turn to procedural maneuvers to orchestrate passage of $8.8 billion in disaster money in keeping with the agreement. Ryan, the House Budget Committee's chairman, was among 66 Republicans opposing the measure.

But, as has been proven time after time ? especially as tornadoes and hurricanes rip through politically conservative states ? even the sturdiest tea party supporters like the government when it comes to doling out money to storm victims for motels and other temporary housing and to help with house repairs.

Simply put, when disaster strikes, politicians respond ? sometimes to the dismay of conservatives who see politicians milking disasters to win projects that couldn't fly on their own, like Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Cochran's failed bid six years ago for $700 million to relocate a rail line along the Gulf Coast so his state could build a new east-west highway.

The new system makes it more difficult for lawmakers to try such maneuvers, though such "pork barrel" tactics largely have been halted anyway with the GOP takeover of the House, with Republicans instituting a ban on so-called earmarks.

Many House Republicans, however, are unhappy with the new approach. Ryan earlier this year tried to gut it and eliminate $10 billion a year in disaster costs when putting together the House GOP budget.

But in doing so Ryan sideswiped a still-powerful Appropriations Committee that was still stinging from $19 billion in Budget Committee-induced cuts to last year's deal. Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky., protested to GOP leaders and won a gentleman's agreement that the new system would stay in place, at least for this year.

However, Ryan's point of view might still prevail if Mitt Romney defeats Obama in November.

What Ryan proposes is that when disaster strikes, lawmakers scour the rest of the budget for savings to pay for rebuilding homes, roads and schools and helping small businesses. Put another way, instead of being an excuse to increase spending, disasters would offer an opportunity to make further cuts elsewhere in the government.

That's easier said than done. The portion of the budget that would face cuts ? the day-to-day operating expenses for federal agencies ? already has absorbed several rounds of cuts under GOP control of the House and faces almost a decade's worth of tight limits under last year's budget deal.

And should a huge disaster like Hurricane Katrina hit, it's simply unrealistic to find cuts of the magnitude required. Katrina ended up costing taxpayers more than $60 billion. Much of that money was approved when images of hurricane victims were still fresh in the minds of lawmakers and voters and as the George W. Bush administration continued to reel from its initial botched response.

It's also easier to summon the political fortitude to demand that disaster relief be paid for when the area you represent hasn't been hit. In particularly bad disaster years, political pressure accumulates as the toll of Midwestern floods, Southern tornadoes and coastal storms is felt by more and more voters and their representatives.

That's exactly what happened last year in the wake of Hurricane Irene, which prompted liberals like Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and tea party-backed Republicans like Rep. Nan Hayworth of New York to form a coalition to press for aid.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac forced the Republicans to do what the Democrats had already done voluntarily: shorten their national convention from four days to three. But the show, as they say, must go on. Political conventions are calibrated theater, after all, and as with any big show, random elements can cause chaos.

As the GOP convenes in Tampa for a convention delayed by a major storm and clouded by the fraught, Katrina-scarred politics of major storms in general, what are audiences looking for from this gathering? What are the mechanics involved in making the big show resonate for its audience? The answer, say some who either craft or assess image-making, is twofold: to acknowledge the storm without appearing to be making political hay out of it, and to keep things simple and, when possible, nonconfrontational.

"The American public is just about at wits' end with everything being partisan," says Richard S. Olson, who studies the politics of disaster at Florida International University in Miami.

"One of the problems with these scripted conventions is that, when something happens literally during convention time, the scripts make the speakers look out of touch," he says. "And if the RNC wants to connect to the broad American public, one of the ways to do that would be to talk about it, talk about disasters as transcending normal everyday politics and make it a true national concern."

Political conventions in general have been losing viewership for years. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, bemoaned announcements by some news outlets that they didn't plan to carry his wife's address live. But do people ? those involved in politics and regular voters alike ? expect too much from these gatherings?

"I'm not sure it's fundamentally an exercise of winning independent voters or bridging the credibility gap that a challenger has against an incumbent," says Terry Holt, who served as a senior adviser for the RNC and as senior communication strategist on both of George W. Bush's successful campaigns. "I don't look at the convention as the be all and the end all. It's the opening act of the general election campaign. It's important that it go well and that it showcase the high points of Romney's agenda. It's the gun going off and not the whole race."

Howard Bragman's counsel would be relatively straightforward. Bragman, who gave PR advice to former Bill Clinton intern and paramour Monica Lewinsky and her family "after you know what," says he would parade across the convention stage the following people: Ann Romney, all five of the couple's sons and as many of their 18 grandkids as the family could muster.

"Whoever could humanize this guy and start to build a dimensional character as opposed to a cardboard cutout who looks presidential," says Bragman, vice chairman of reputation.com.

To that end, the RNC spent a reported $2.5 million building a stage for Romney's acceptance speech that, in the words of one NPR commentator, evokes the feeling of a living room ? a uniting, humanizing image. That approach makes sense to Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, who says Romney can do this year what Ronald Reagan did in 1980: Focus his audience on the things that unite the party and avoid the rest.

"They have to stay away from the social and cultural issues," says Zelizer, author of the book "Governing America." ''They really need to stick on taxes and budgets, regulation. They have to make that the broader theme."

That sounds right to Kevin Homel, 57, who owns a small mail-order business near Pittsburgh. He was a registered Democrat until about 20 years ago, when he switched to the GOP. The message he wants from Tampa: that his party "is heading in the direction of fiscal responsibility by balancing the budget, repealing 'Obamacare' and reducing the size of government which, overall, is in line with the Tea Party."

Ray Davis, 47, a woodworker from Little Rock, Ark., has seen his business take a hit along with the housing market. He's not planning to watch the convention for the same reason he's decided he won't be voting for Obama. "Actions speak louder than words," he says. "They sit up there and talk a good game, but it's how they carry it out that matters."

With Missouri U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin's comments on rape and abortion, and Romney's joke about Obama's birth certificate, "August has been a month of distractions," Holt says. So how to prevent Isaac from becoming another one? Leverage it ? carefully.

In keeping with the GOP message of people not relying too heavily on government, Republicans could "highlight people who are in some ways being entrepreneurial heroes ... people who are just, on their own volition, going out and helping people, protecting property and otherwise mitigating the storm damage," says Seth Masket, a political scientist at the University of Denver.

While some might see that as taking advantage of a bad situation, Masket says the danger is minimal because "the issue already comes politicized."

"It's a hurricane during a national convention," he says. "And the last time one of these hit New Orleans, it was a major political issue for the Republicans. It's going to affect them politically, whether they want it or not."

It might seem disingenuous, but Syracuse University professor Robert Thompson says Tampa organizers need to intersperse the speeches with prayers for Gulf Coast residents and moments of silence and, generally, "not make it look like you're clueless as to what's going on."

"A lot of people have grown cynical to that kind that of thing, but you have to do it," says Thompson, director of the school's Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture. "Maybe you could not plan your convention in a vulnerable city during hurricane season. But it's too late for that. They've rented the rooms and hired the catering."

The trick, he says, will be getting heard above Isaac's winds.

But I think we live comfortably here. London is expensive, but I think we live comfortably. You're getting by OK on the million-dollar home, the Audi, and the flat-screen TV?
