Rights groups dismayed by Afghanistan's return to executions

KABUL (Reuters) - Human rights groups reacted with dismay on Wednesday to Afghanistan's resumption of executions after a near-four-year moratorium on a penalty that characterized the austere rule of the former Taliban regime.

Eight men found guilty of "crimes against the people, especially women and children" were hanged on Tuesday and eight more were to meet the same fate either on Wednesday or Thursday, according to a government official.

This alarmed activists who said the return of executions in a country with a weak judiciary was a setback.

"The death penalty is an act of cruelty that should never be used," said Brad Adams, Asia director at the New York-based Human Rights Watch.

"Its use in Afghanistan, where a fair trial is typically out of the question, is even more horrific."

Those executed included a man who strangled to death a mother and her two infant children and men found guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering young boys and girls.

Officials said that in accordance with the law, President Hamid Karzai signed off on the executions. There have been only two executions in Afghanistan in the past four years.

"The eight hangings in a single day are a terrible step backwards for Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai should stop future executions and commit to a formal moratorium," Adams said.

Rafi Ferdous, a spokesman for Afghanistan's Council of Ministers Secretariat, defended the hangings.

"By applying this (penalty), the rule of law is implemented. This is a lesson to be learned," Ferdous said in a statement.

EXECUTIONS RARE

Executions were commonplace during the Taliban's strict 1996-2001 rule of Afghanistan, when adulterers and murderers were shot dead in public. Such executions still take place in some areas under the influence of the Taliban.

But judicially sanctioned executions have been rare since the Taliban government fell, with unofficial moratoriums between 2001 and 2004 and from 2008 until recently.

The death by firing squad of 15 prisoners in Kabul in 2007 and several more executions in 2008 sparked international condemnation. Until Tuesday, only two people had been put to death in the past four years.

In a strongly worded statement, London-based Amnesty International suggested Karzai's decision to approve the executions was for his own political gain, to prove his government could maintain law and order.

It said the death penalty was deplorable and described Afghanistan's legal system as "seriously flawed".

"Detainees are frequently tortured into confessions then relied upon by a judiciary that has little to no independence," it said. "There is simply no guarantee of a fair trial."

Hussain Ali Moin, an investigator with Afghanistan's Independent Human Right Commission, said that although the death penalty was legal, there were concerns about whether courts had been fair to those who were executed.

"The death penalty is an irreversible punishment," he said. "We haven't had full access to these cases... Still we cannot say if their trials were fair."

Holiday Gift Guide for Babies, Families and Bloggers! | Don't Mind ...

Here it is, the thing you?ve all been waiting for?

gift guide graphic 300x189 Gift Guide for Babies, Families and Bloggers

I?ve got stuff for babies, kids, families and even us humble bloggers. Read on!

For Baby (aka Mama)

2012 02 25 11 40 27 186 e1353507788778 224x300 Gift Guide for Babies, Families and Bloggers

The Isis Carseat Cozy Cover is my #1 winter baby recommendation. Lots of people use various items like the BundleMe to keep their babies warm. I use it in the stroller. But for the infant bucket seat it can make getting little arms and legs in and out a chore. The Cozy Cover goes over your buckled in baby, meaning there?s nothing interfering with the straps or safety. It zips up super easy and is a breeze to put on or remove. We used ours when we took Tessa home from the hospital well into the spring.

I heard nary a peep through the cold weather. That little girl was snug as a bug. And this is an exclusive item you can?t just find anywhere. (Isis is also a small business, a great place to put your cash.) AND, you get not only your snug and warm baby, you have a built-in baby-shield. No one ever tried to put a finger on that baby when we were out and about with the cover. If you don?t like your little one being touched in the germy season, I can?t recommend this enough.

It comes in pink and blue. We liked the gender-neutral green/blue bird. Isis worked with Tuff Cookie to make these, they?re made in MA out of 50% recycled fleece. I know you guys are into shopping for good quality, made in the US products. ?Isis Parenting, $58.00, Available online or in Isis stores in metro Boston.

Gift Guide for Babies, Families and Bloggers? When Tessa?s Grandma visited a few weeks ago she came bearing gifts as grandparents tend to do. Since then, the Roll and Chase Bumble Bee from Bright Stars has been the IT toy in our house. Tessa LOVES it. She cannot get enough of it.

When you press the buttons, the bee vibrates, rolls and plays music. Tessa goes nuts for it. And my favorite thing is that Graham will play with it, too.

He?ll come sit with Tessa, press the light up buttons, watch it roll and the two of them will laugh and laugh. Sure, music and lights toys aren?t a parent?s favorite, but I am totally won over by this bee for getting my kids to laugh together. I?m a sucker that way.

I?d definitely encourage it for babies who are good sitters, it?s been great to encourage Tessa to scoot around to catch it.

Available online at ToysRUs and Target for about $14.

2012 05 15 18 52 16 836 Gift Guide for Babies, Families and BloggersIf you know an expecting mom, a great baby shower gift is the Zen Swaddle. A swaddler is a must for a new baby if you?re going to manage to get any sleep. The Zen Swaddle has some great features: super soft 100% cotton fabric, a pocket for tiny baby legs that allows small ones to wear it and continue to grow with it, the adorable stitching. But it also has soft weighted sections on baby?s chest and sides to mimic the gentle pressure you give your baby when they have trouble sleeping. (If you?ve never tried the light pressure on baby?s chest trick, it?s a good one.) You can tell this is a product invented by a Mom.

Also, it has the cutest baby ever on the package.

Available at Magic Beans in Boston metro area, or find a store near you. Retails for about $39.99

Kid & Family Gifts

2012 09 17 18 20 18 781 300x224 Gift Guide for Babies, Families and BloggersGraham really enjoys playing with Daddy?s iPad. But with that brand new and expensive piece of equipment (which is for WORK rather than kid play) we have to play it safe around the kiddos.

Thanks to Mommy Niri and Fisher Price, we?ve made the iPad safe from kid hands and bumps with the Apptivity Case. It has a durable screen to keep smudges off. You can block the home screen button (or not). The little chew rings for baby are a great touch with our little one. Also it?s easy to take on and off (only tool you need is a coin) but too hard for little hands to do themselves.

Graham likes to use the iPad himself, but we can usually convince him to play with Tessa. When they both play, we?ve used the free Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Apps. They?ve worked astonishingly well with both kids.

The Apptivity iPad case is available at stores everywhere and retails for around $30. There?s also an iPhone case which retails from $10 to $15.

Gift Guide for Babies, Families and Bloggers?Since Graham got his cow hat, I?ve had absolutely no difficulty getting him to put it on each morning before the bus comes. Also, his awesome bus driver greets him with ?Moo!? most mornings.

The hat is by Knitwits, made by hand with New Zealand wool. The inside has a fleece lining that?s very warm. I am so in love with these. It is possible that people who live in cold climates that I send gifts to just *might* find one in their Christmas gifts this year. (So if you have a preference, let me know. I am a big fan of the fox, the moose and many, many more.)

They have kids sizes and youth/adult. And they make mittens, scarves and a variety of other adorable products. (If your kids are character-oriented, they also have Sesame Street and Hello Kitty.)

You can find Knitwits animal hats in their online store. They retail for $29.99

Experience gifts are awesome. Getting a family a membership to a local zoo, museum or aquarium is worth so much more than its actual value. Especially if it means the kids will have somewhere to run around in the summer. We?re loving having regular access to the New England Zoo and its amazing new playground. We can be in and out in an hour or two. And while we?re there I feel bad for the one-visit parents who keep telling their kids, ?Come on! Come look! Let?s go look at this!? instead of letting their kids roam and relax. We?ve also enjoyed an Aquarium membership, which gives us an indoor place to seek warmth and fun in the winter.?A one-year family membership for 2 adults and up to 4 children at the New England Zoo is $95. A one-year membership for 2 at the New England Aquarium is $85, a membership for 4 is $135.

You don?t have to be a foodie to appreciate a subscription to ChopChopMagazine. It?s full of snack ideas and fun recipes. It?ll also encourage your kids to help in the kitchen and get them eating healthier. Especially good if you?ve got a wide range of ages, this is great for little and big kids.?A?1 year subscription is $14.95, 2 years is $24.95

Or give a family photo session with an awesome local photographer. (Here in MA I recommend Rebecca Deaton.)

Or how about a gift card to a getaway, like?my favorite Maine B&B?for some tired parents?

Gifts for Bloggers (aka Me)

Here we?re moving into stuff I haven?t actually used or owned to the stuff I just plain want.

I figure if I just keep talking about the Microsoft Surface long enough maybe they will see how desperately I want it. If your laptop is a hand-me-down from your husband who doesn?t go easy on his electronics and the hinges are getting scary and the keys are starting to stick and the operating speed is dismally slow, well? you could wish for a lot of things.

But I?m wishing for a Surface because I love the look, I love the portable tablet capability, and I love the simple add on of the keyboard which is also a cover. Why bother with a laptop? It will go swimmingly with my Arc Touch Mouse.?Surface starts at $499, the Arc Touch Mouse is $69.?

I?m also drooling over cameras for the second year in a row. When you go to events as press it does look a little flimsy to take phone pics. (And my phone does not take great pics, as you may have noticed. The fuzzy feature on Instagram is my friend.)

Real bloggers use DSLR cameras and one of these days I?m really going to join them. Lately I?m eyeing the Nikon D3000. I?ve also looked at the Canon T3. A good beginners model would be awesome.?They retail for far more than I?ve got to spend, and they?re the CHEAP DSLR?s.

If you already have a camera, start dropping hints about a photography class. Check your local adult education center. Boston?s has a Digital Photography Class for Beginners?($320) and a How to Figure Out a Digital Camera class ($58).

You may also want to set your blogger up with a Conference ticket (there are TONS of them) or even just a gift card for airfare or hotel to help them pay their way to fun and learning and dance parties.

We also rack up blog expenses that aren?t fun and have to be paid every year and every time we update. Hosting, design, themes, coding, backups, domain names? blogs are not all fun and games. Getting them up and running takes not just a lot of time but some cash, too. You may want to send your blogger a little gift via Paypal to help them cover their blogging expenses. Very simple to do if you have a Paypal account of your own and someone?s email address.

?

Now it?s your turn: what do you have your eye on to give or receive this year?

Disclosure: I have no relationship with any of the items here, although I am open to such things and yes, I?m talking to you, Microsoft Surface. I bought the Isis Carseat Cover and Zutano booties but all other baby and kid items were received as gifts.

Amid the ruins, Gazans say pity the living, not the dead

Mohammed Saber / EPA

A man stands in the rubble of a destroyed house belonging to the Dallo family after it was hit by an Isareli air strike in the north of Gaza City on Sunday. The airstrike killed at least 10 members of the same family, including four children.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

GAZA CITY -- Thousands of Palestinians filled Gaza City?s main square on Thursday to celebrate their "victory" in the latest round of violence with Israel, even as rescue workers were still sifting through the rubble of a home in the neighborhood of El Nasr on the city's outskirts.

Earlier in the week, rescue workers frantically combed through the three-story house, which was reduced to rubble by an Israeli airstrike that killed 12 people -- ?ten from a single family that included four children. Israel claimed it was home to a high-ranking commander with Hamas? military wing.

The incident -- or, as Palestinians here describe it, "the Dallo massacre," in reference to the family that lived there -- has become one of the defining moments of the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Israel, Hamas claim victory amid Gaza cease-fire

After eight days of fighting -- 1,500 Israeli airstrikes and 1,500 Palestinian rockets fired, according to Israel Defense Forces -- both sides emerged claiming to be victorious: Palestinian factions for "resisting" and "withstanding" the might of the world?s fourth largest military; Israel for dealing Hamas a blow while minimizing the casualties of Hamas rockets on Israel.

Shops and stores are reopening and a semblance of normalcy is returning to Gaza's streets after a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is put into effect. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Gaza.

But in the small farming community of Attatra, there were no winners.

Walid, 42, and has family were at home on Tuesday night when the Israeli military began dropping leaflets on their farm. Even before the leaflets hit the ground, Walid knew it what they were -- a warning sign. The Israeli military ordered them and their neighbors to evacuate their area immediately.

In 2008, Walid was sitting at home when the same leaflets fell on his house. Back then, he did not heed the warning. Instead he and his family remained on their farm. During that Israeli ground invasion of Gaza, Walid?s brother was killed, Walid?s home was destroyed and their farm, the source of their livelihood, razed.

Members of the al-Attar family, displaced during the eight-day conflict with Israel, return to their home in the Atatra area in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday.

His is one of a thousand similar stories. This time around, he knew what a ground invasion would mean for his family. So he didn?t chance it. Once he saw the leaflets fall he packed his children and wife in the back of a car, grabbed whatever blankets, sheets and clothes they could, and headed to his sister's house where along with 40 other extended family members they took shelter until a ceasefire went into effect on Wednesday evening.

Israel's Iron Dome shield cost up to $30 million

There are no early warning systems, no bunkers or shelters to find a moment of refuge in the chaos of war for the people of Gaza. There is no Israeli-style Iron Dome system to protect them, just "Naseeb" ? the Arabic word for destiny.

As the shops opened up and storekeepers surveyed the damage, families began setting up mourning tents to welcome condolences for those who died.

Near NBC News' hotel a a mourning tent was set up for?44-year-old Mohammed Saeed Al Qaddada. He was a member of Fatah, Hamas? political rival organization and the that Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the American-backed Palestinian Authority, belongs to.

Former Ambassador to the U.N. Stuart Holliday explains the ongoing delicate diplomacy keeping the conflict between Israel and Hamas from escalating.

He was killed by an airstrike on his car while he was with fighters ferrying weapons and rockets, according to family. He was not loyal to Hamas, but felt compelled to join their ranks when Israel began another attack on Gaza.

At the Red Crescent ambulance dispatch center in Tel el Hawa, first responders worked nonstop for eight days. It?s not uncommon for the men and women here to spend days at a time away from their homes and families.

Israel declares mission accomplished, Hamas claims victory

On the day our crew spent a few hours with them they were dispatched multiple times, all to rescue or treat casualties from Israel?s attacks -- including a young child suffering from shock after a wall in the family home collapsed.

The plight of the first responders pales in comparison to the doctors at Gaza City?s main hospital. Poorly equipped, understaffed and inadequately trained, doctors and nurses worked endlessly to treat ?-- sometimes unsuccessfully -- the flow of patients. By the end of the fighting, the death toll stood at 162 people killed, according to hospital officials.

The painful reality of Gaza is that even after the fighting, the return to "normal" is far from it.

Blockaded since 2006 and under siege since 2007, Gaza has become a tough place to live. The U.N. predicts it will be uninhabited by 2020. Stifled, underdeveloped and destitute, Gaza is a place where residents wait for their "Naseeb" to change.

Bernat Armangue / AP

Emergency workers help a woman after she was injured during an Israel strike on a sports field next to her house in Gaza City on Monday.

At a small auto mechanic shop a young technician named Wissam was covered in the grime of grease, car oil and dirt. His shop had reopened for the first time in days. He was not expecting any patrons on Thursday but for him it was important to get back to normal.

"Don?t feel sorry for those who died in this war, they are martyrs and will go to heaven," he said. "Feel sorry for those us who will have to stay here trapped in Gaza."

Back at the Dallo house, the workers sifting through the rubble made a gruesome discovery. Days after the attack and hours after they had begun once again to clear the rubble, they found the body of seven-year-old Ranin and the body of 35-year-old Mohammed el Dallo -- raising the death toll to 164.?

Arizona Charter Bus Crash: 1 Dead, 9 Injured

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. ? One person was killed and nine others were injured Tuesday after a pickup truck going the wrong way on a rural Arizona interstate struck a charter bus head-on, authorities said.

The pickup truck burst into flames, and the driver was declared dead at the scene on Interstate 10 in Casa Grande, about 50 miles south of Phoenix. Authorities couldn't immediately say if he died on impact or in the ensuing fire.

None of the passengers on the bus suffered life-threatening injuries, said Capt. Brian Preston of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

"Generally when you have a vehicle going the wrong way on an interstate, you'd think it would be much worse than this," Preston said.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said authorities received several 911 calls just before 2:15 p.m. about a driver on the main route from Phoenix to Tucson travelling east in the westbound lanes.

"We were responding when the accident occurred," said Graves, adding that the name of the driver wasn't immediately available.

Preston said the man was in his 70s, and that investigators will be working to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The fiery crash closed the westbound lanes of I-10 near Interstate 8 for hours, backing up traffic for miles until one lane was reopened Tuesday evening. The bus still sat on the side of the freeway, its front end crumpled from the impact and several windows blown out.

Graves said the TBC Conexion bus from Mexico was headed to Phoenix with 16 people aboard, including the driver.

The driver, who was conscious and walking around when authorities arrived, was among two people who were seriously injured and airlifted from the scene to a Phoenix hospital, Preston said. Seven passengers on the bus were taken by ground ambulance to Casa Grande-area hospitals with injuries authorities described as minor to moderate.

The identities of the injured weren't immediately released. Calls to TBC Conexion's offices in Phoenix and Tucson weren't immediately returned Tuesday evening.

Graves said an 18-wheeler jackknifed at the accident scene and hit the side of the bus, but the main damage was done by the pickup truck. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn't injured.

Lex Luger appears on "Hardcore Pawn"; sells ring gear for charity

Lex Luger

Former WWE Superstar and two-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger appeared on Tuesday night's episode of "Hardcore Pawn" on TruTV, selling several pieces of his signature ring gear to raise money for the non-profit organization "World Wrestling Outreach."

The memorabilia Luger sold at the American Jewelry and Loan, a family-owned pawn store in Detroit, included The Total Package's rhinestone-studded lightning robe, and netted a total price tag of $3,500 for all of the items.

Luger was instantly recognized by Les and Seth Gold as soon as he stepped into the store, as both of them were professional wrestling fans growing up. Shop owner Les even got to try on Luger's black-and-silver robe before making an initial offer of $2,500 for the items. After a little back-and-forth negotiating, Les agreed to The Total Package's requested price tag of $3,500 because it was for charity.

"Well, I personally am very excited. I didn't know what to expect," Luger said during his appearance on the show. "I was getting in there with these master negotiators. On behalf of a good cause, they went a little soft on us, and I'm very thankful."

Lex's autographed memorabilia, including the rhinestone-studded robe, have been posted on American Jewelry and Loan's website with a sale price of $7,499.99.
