FOR KIDS: Pathways to research: Connecting with scientists

Budding researchers get ahead by spending their free time working side by side with real scientists

Web edition : Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Not many scientists begin their careers with a busted knee. But that?s exactly how Evan Olin, now 18, got his start. While a freshman at Ossining High School in New York, this competitive runner ran so fast and so hard that he sustained serious injuries to both legs. It kept him off the track for months. Rather than becoming discouraged by his limping gait, however, Olin turned to science. He started exploring how intense activities ? like his long jogs ? could harm the human body.

The summer before his sophomore year, Olin landed a spot working in the lab of Gregory Gutierrez at New York University. Gutierrez studies how human joints develop and function. Eventually Olin started plopping experienced joggers onto treadmills to see how they ran when forced to jog barefoot ? a type of running that?s become popular among exercise fiends.

He and other students profiled here show how even high school students can begin to participate in interesting and important research.

Insurance bill shock for safe home | Toowoomba News | Local News ...

EVEN high and dry Toowoomba home owners face huge increases to premiums on home and contents insurance as the payouts of the 2011 floods take their toll.

It?s contrary to what Suncorp told me would happen.

EVEN high and dry Toowoomba home owners face huge increases to premiums on home and contents insurance as the billion-dollar payouts of the 2011 floods take their toll.

Insurers across the board have announced increased costs for flood-prone properties, but in many cases homes outside flood areas have also been slugged.

One Cohoe St resident has been hit with almost triple the premium she was paying 12 months ago.

She received a bill this week saying her Suncorp insurance premium had risen from $758 to $2091 within the space of a year.

"After a lot of haggling, the guy on the other end of the phone checked and agreed we weren't in a flood zone," the woman said.

"He eventually reduced the price to $1200, as long as we increased the excess for our home and contents to $1000.

"Then I rang RACQ and was offered a $950 premium with $1000 excess on home and only $300 on contents."

The woman decided to go with the latter option, but was concerned many residents would not shop around.

"If I were some frail old lady and got this bill, with no explanation in the letter, I wouldn't know what to do," she said.

Former council candidate Rosemary Morley has been in contact with the woman and forwarded her complaints to local and State Government representatives.

"She lives on the top of the Range and couldn't get flooded if she tried," Ms Morley said.

"Tripling the price is just scandalous.

"We've been loyal Suncorp customers forever, but now we're waiting in trepidation for our next bill to arrive."

A Suncorp spokesman said all insurance providers were reviewing their premiums and flood mitigation works by councils could help bring costs back down.

He said accounts were designed on a case-by-case basis using flood mapping and modelling as a guide.

Federal Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane has told residents he would follow up their complaints with insurance companies in the coming days if their homes had been wrongly declared high-risk.

"This is contrary to what Suncorp told me would happen," he said in an email.

NIH Retires Research Chimps at Troubled Facility

U.S. federal support for invasive chimpanzee research continues to wane

By Meredith Wadman of Nature magazine

Early on 21 September, Francis Collins called Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in Washington DC, with news that the animal activist had been waiting for. Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), told Pacelle that the agency is to cease funding the troubled New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) in Louisiana, and will retire the 110 NIH-owned chimpanzees there.

The decision leaves just over 300 chimpanzees available for invasive research in two other NIH-supported research centers, and comes nine months after an NIH-solicited report from the US Institute of Medicine found that most invasive chimpanzee research was scientifically unnecessary.

In a statement, the NIH on 21 September said that the remaining population of chimpanzees can adequately serve current research needs, which include testing of monoclonal antibody therapies.

The NIH says that by August 2013, ten of the NIRC?s NIH-owned animals will be relocated to Chimp Haven, a federally funded sanctuary in Keithsville, Louisiana. The other 100 will move to the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio, where they will be off limits for invasive research but accessible for behavioral studies and research using information collected through routine veterinary care.

The San Antonio centre currently houses 141 chimpanzees. The only remaining centre for NIH-funded invasive chimp research is the Michale E. Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research in Bastrop, Texas, which has 167.

Safe haven
Pacelle welcomed the NIH's decision, calling it a ?significant step forward in our goal toward ending invasive experiments on chimpanzees?. However, the HSUS ? which in 2009 released an undercover video investigation that exposed repeated episodes of animal mistreatment at the NIRC ? is pushing for more of the center?s animals to be sent to Chimp Haven.

The NIH says that the forested 80-hectare sanctuary will be at or near full occupancy with the addition of the ten NIRC animals, but the HSUS argues that the NIH should pay for more infrastructure at Chimp Haven to allow it to house more chimpanzees.

The NIRC?s longstanding contract to support NIH-owned chimpanzees was worth US$1.2 million in 2011. The current contract will expire in August 2013 and will not be renewed. The program's principal investigator, Thomas Rowell, left the post of NIRC director in August.

But the NIH decision does not mean the end of the NIRC, which houses roughly 240 privately owned chimpanzees, and more than 6,000 macaques and other monkeys. The centre has a full roster of industry clients. ?We look forward to expanding services and capabilities to support federal and private research and continuing to work with the NIH,? says Aaron Martin, communications director for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which owns the research centre.

The NIH is not the only US agency backing away from chimpanzee research. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a 10 September letter to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, an activist group based in Washington DC, that it no longer funds chimpanzee research. The CDC, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, had as recently as 2010 been funding viral hepatitis studies in young female chimpanzees.

The Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, a bill introduced into the US Congress in 2011, would phase out all federally supported invasive research on chimpanzees and retire the government-owned animals to sanctuaries.

Trampolines no place for kids, docs warn

Trampolines are too dangerous for children to use, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned Monday. There were nearly 100,000 trampoline injuries in 2009 -- and safety nets don't offer much protection, doctors say.

Video: Zoo staff: Tiger did nothing wrong in attack

>> were trying to figure out why a man decided to place himself in life threatening danger the way he did. why would anyone want to jump into into the tigers' den at a zoo? we get the story tonight from nbc's michelle franzen .

>> reporter: at the bronx zoo today it was business as usual .

>> i didn't really care. just wanted to come to the zoo, look at animals.

>> reporter: following the unusual attack yesterday when officials say a man jumped into the tigers' den. zoo officials say 25-year-old david villalobos was riding the monorail tour when he leaped from the train and cleared a 16-foot-high fence putting himself face to face with a siberian tiger named bashuda.

>> he made a deliberate effort to get over the fence. it was not by accident.

>> reporter: he was in the tiger exhibit for ten minutes. zoo officials say he's lucky the 400-pound animal didn't kill him.

>> the tiger did nothing wrong at all. if the tiger wanted to do harm to this individual, he certainly would have had time to do that.

>> reporter: still, villalobos suffered bites to the arms, shoulder and leg. zoo workers had to use a fire extinguisher to get the tiger to back off and were able to get villalobos to cross under an electrified fence to safety. initially zoo officials thought he wanted to take his own life. he told investigators today his leap was definitely not a suicide attempt, but a desire to be one with the tiger. on his facebook page villalobos described a fascination with wildlife and tigers. he remains in the hospital and he will be charged with trespassing for his potentially deadly stunt. michelle franzen , nbc news, new york.
